I’ve been running hard these past weeks, from D.C. to New Jersey to states across the country. Long days. Too little sleep. Fired up by what’s happening in our nation. And yet, in the middle of all of it, I keep meeting people carrying burdens heavier than mine who still choose kindness. Recently, I went into a hot kitchen after an event to thank the staff preparing the food. One man was sweaty, clearly grinding through a long day. I thanked him and started to walk away when he stopped me and said: “Hey man, you okay? You look like you need a hug.” I was stunned. I came to encourage them, and somehow he saw me. Truth is, I did need that hug. That moment reminded me: kindness is power. Seeing people is power. Taking even 30 seconds to lift someone up can change their whole day. Today, check on someone. Thank someone. Encourage someone. You never know who needs the hug.

On this, my birthday… I thank God for a year, though with more challenges than victories, that taught me lessons hidden in pain, in loss, in struggle. For showing me that taking a noble stand, even if it costs you, even when you’re criticized, is far better than living safe, silent, and untested. I Thank God for a year that built grit in so many of us and taught us more about the invincible power of not giving up. For the humbling truth that no one person can save the world but we all can serve in it - especially in small acts. Daily kindness. And maybe that’s how the world heals, not all at once, but a million times over. Thank you for reminding me, in a long year, to hold onto wonder, joy and even fun - as defiance, as resistance, as restoration in the long fight. And this year… thank you for a love that changed my life, for a wife who brought with her a universe of joy, and a partner to walk with, day by day, turning the ordinary into something sacred. Another year older. Another year grateful. Another year still learning how to love, to serve, to stand. I was in Israel when the horrific attacks carried out by Hamas started on Saturday. My team and I are now safe, but like many we are shaken, angered, and heartbroken by the hundreds killed, the thousands injured, those taken hostage, and all who are directly affected by these sickening terrorist attacks. After this experience, more than ever, I am committed to working with my colleagues in the Senate to continue supporting Israel’s security and ensuring stability in the region — and I hope one day soon, a long-term and just peace in the region.
