The DCSO is looking for the public 's assistance in locating the individual in this video who was hit by a vehicle at the side show the CAT Team stopped last night in the area of 135th and F Street. The vehicle that hit her was an Orange Camaro, we do have the plates and owner's information but will be withholding that to allow them the opportunity to come forward. These sideshow events are not just 'kids' out 'having fun'. They are illegal, and they are dangerous, often involving drugs, weapons, and alcohol, not to mention the reckless driving behaviors. The CAT Team will continue to monitor and stop them whenever and wherever they spring up. If you have any information that can help identify the individual who was hit, please contact us at either [email protected] or 402-444-6000. You can also contact @Crime at 402-444-7867 or via the P3Tips mobile app.

Porch Pirates Beware! 🏴☠️🚓 DCSO is delivering packages of our own across Douglas County. The only difference is that ours also contain a tracking device and felony value items. Next time you think about stealing someone's package, just know it could be one of ours and lead to your arrest and spending the holidays behind bars.

This afternoon, protesters descended upon the Douglas County Courthouse Complex, a location the DCSO is statutorily obligated to protect. “Last night, per reporting from Omaha Scanner an elderly homeless man caught himself on fire while trying to warm himself with an illicit camp fire. Two hero Omaha Police officers saved his life. Sadly and ironically, this all happened one block away from a homless shelter. If we truly care, then we must strive to create smarter public policies. This was someone’s grandpa, someone’s dad. Federal, state, county and local governments must find wholistic solutions which balance helping with enforcing the law. Allowing vulnerable people to legally live in these conditions isn’t empathy, in my view it’s enabling and exacerbating the problem. These folks should be getting help in shelters, not living on the cold streets, starting fires and struggling with unaddressed behavioral health issues and addiction. Illicit public camping is dangerous for those who live in the camps and equally dangerous for innocent people who live and work around them. It should be banned.” -Sheriff Hanson

Over the weekend, the Community Action Team conducted stop sign enforcement at 138th & Hillsborough Drive. 19 stop sign citations were issued and one fugitive with a burglary warrant out of Texas was arrested. We have many more neighborhood stops signs on our list, so either stop at the octagon or face a $124 fine.

Last week Sheriff Hanson shared an opportunity for those who believe that we can’t remove tent encampments until we provide “housing first”, to volunteer to shelter tent dwellers in their own homes. 👎Not surprisingly, we received no volunteers. 👉 Instead we need to focus on real solutions to help this vulnerable part of our community: ✅Ban tent encampments and support our local shelters, no one gets better in a tent encampment ✅Increase our mental health infrastructure in the community ✅Support creating a specifically designated problem solving court to help these vulnerable people

As of earlier today, all adult shelters are still accepting people who walk in during this cold weather. Last week, DCSO cleared an illegal encampment with a sex offender inhabitant. If you are living in a tent or experiencing homelessness, please get to a shelter, or contact 211 for assistance. In the thread we have linked a document with 24/7 contact information for the various shelters in the Douglas County area. 211 is always available as a resource as well.

The CAT Team returned to the corner of 204th and George B Lake Parkway this week because evidently some people still haven't gotten the message. Let's say it together: 🔴(red) means stop, 🟢(green)means go, 🟡(yellow) means clear the intersection because the light is changing, unless it's a flashing yellow turn arrow, which means use caution and turn when clear. Under no circumstance does it mean grip the wheel, floor the gas and try to beat it.

📦🏴☠️ Porch Pirate Caught in the Act 🎬 He thought he scored big when he snagged the box. What he actually stole was a GPS-tracked package and a trip to jail. Moral of the story: If it’s not your porch, don’t take it. 🎄 This operation was brought to you by Sergeant Stern's Juvenile Court Security Team (with the reluctant participation of the Sheriff 😉). 🎄

The City of Omaha has made the decision to continue allowing illicit tent encampments on public property within city limits. While there are numerous differing opinions on this policy, DCSO will not interfere in its implementation. The safety and well-being of Douglas County residents remains our top priority. The Community Action Team stands ready to assist if encampments continue to go unaddressed after being reported to the city and they present a risk to public safety.

The discussion around unauthorized tent encampments on city property continues. Sheriff Hanson believes these encampments are unsafe, not only for those living in them, but also for neighbors and businesses nearby. He believes local shelters remain the best pathway to safety, stability, mental health care, and sobriety. But some disagree, saying no one should be required to leave an encampment until they are provided permanent housing. That’s why the DCSO is launching the new Sheltering Assistance Program, a way for those who are passionate about providing housing first to directly help by opening their homes to someone in need. 👉 How You Can Help: If you have the space, ability, and heart to provide support, we invite you to join this effort. As we continue our mission to curtail illegal street racing, Sheriff Hanson wants to provide members of the street racing community with a safe and legal way to test their driving skills and car's abilities in a controlled environment. DCSO is proud to partner with I-29 Speedway to provide $4,000 worth of gift cards to street racers to avoid traffic fatality tragedies.
