There are moments when words feel inadequate, and today is one of them. What happened at Bondi is heartbreaking beyond measure. An Australian place woven into our collective sense of ease and freedom became the setting for fear, loss, and unimaginable pain. My thoughts are with those who lost their lives, with their families and loved ones whose worlds have been shattered, and with all who were injured or traumatised simply for being there. I think, too, of the bystanders and beachgoers… people who went to the shore seeking the simple pleasures of an Australian summer, and who instead were confronted with violence no one should ever have to witness. I want to express particular sorrow and solidarity with the Jewish community, who had gathered peacefully to celebrate Hanukkah. A festival centred on light, faith, and endurance was met with hatred. That reality is devastating. Jewish Australians should never have to question their safety when practising their faith or celebrating their culture in public. This tragedy is not occurring in a vacuum. Antisemitism has been allowed to grow louder, more visible, and more brazen, and the consequences of that failure are now painfully clear. When hatred is not firmly confronted, it does real harm. Actual harm. Today is for mourning. For honest reflection and for recommitting ourselves to decency, responsibility, and the protection of one another… especially those who are targeted simply for who they are. May those who were lost be remembered with dignity. May those who are suffering find strength and support. And may we not look away from the truths this day demands we face.
