I want to share a really painful and embarrassing memory from my life as a young Christian. In this video I am 16 years old. I am speaking in a church service for the first time in my life. I was fascinated with stories of revival and miracles, and in my circles many "big names" were telling me that there was one man who "really saw the stuff." That man was William Branham. Over and over again the most notable Charismatic ministers that I looked up to pointed me to Branham. "No one ever had the gift like Branham" "No one saw healings like Branham" "We need to pray for Branham's mantle" The narrative was very simple: "Branham was the most anointed healing minister of the 20th century, and he only got 'off' at the very end of his life." Then the command was clear: "We should honor what God did through Branham without stumbling over how he went astray at the end of his life." So here I am on a microphone in front of hundreds of people regurgitating the hagiography of Branham that I had heard from countless individuals I trusted. I tell a room full of people to "honor" a man who was, in reality, nothing more than a charlatan, a friend of notorious white supremacists, and a false teacher. I was 16. I didn't know any better. But the individuals who did know better failed me and continue to fail the people they are influencing. Years later I would throw my life into the "prayer movement" with IHOPKC and other similar ministries, not knowing that the deception of Branham passed through Paul Cain and Bob Jones on to Mike Bickle and so many others. Fast forward to today: lives have been shattered, young men and women have been horribly abused, thousands have rejected Jesus altogether because of the wicked root that stems from Branham. So now, as an almost 30 year old pastor, I want to say unequivocally: William Branham was a false teacher who has done incalculable harm to the body of Christ. He should be rejected completely. There is no meat on the bones. There is no baby in the bathwater. Every word Branham said and everything he did should be rejected. I pray that not one more child grows up thinking that William Branham, Paul Cain, or Mike Bickle are "anointed men of God." May their names be synonymous with the truth of their ministries: abuse, deception, and false teaching.
