My Langata people, the help you have been waiting for has arrived….ARE YOU READY??

I have spent years standing with doctors on the streets, at negotiation tables and in difficult conversations where the welfare and dignity of our medics were at stake. I have seen what happens when you choose to stand up, even when it is difficult. I have taken the risks, faced the pressure and kept showing up because I believe leadership is about standing with people, especially when they need you most. The fight for doctors taught me something simple: when you are entrusted with the responsibility to serve, you cannot afford to look away. That same spirit is what I am bringing home to Lang’ata. The arena may change, but my commitment does not. The people may be different, but the principle remains the same, listen, stand with the people, and get to work. I am not coming to Lang’ata to be another politician. I am coming with the same courage, energy and determination that I have carried into every fight for our doctors. The work continues. This time, it is home.

SHIF IS A CAPSIZING SHIP SHIF is a capsizing ship! There is too much bilge water for it to sail. We have repudiated the act from November 2023, with one message: it will deny Kenyans access to healthcare. A social insurance law with a co-payment component is a fraud. We have consistently warned that the comprehensive medical package provided by NHIF was superior to all other private sector insurance plans. The stoppage was designed to benefit private insurance companies. For civil servants, this is a double robbery and tragedy that we cannot take lying down. We relinquished our medical allowance for comprehensive medical cover, which has now been removed, and yet we are expected to pay five times more—this is insane. We have taken this fight to the courts, including the Court of Appeal. Even the MPs who passed this Act seem oblivious to its consequences. With the current SHIF tariffs, everyone will be forced to DIG DEEPER into their pockets to access care. Public healthcare is being intentionally defunded and made dysfunctional. #RejectSHIF

29 days into the #DoctorsStrikeKE, the resolve for a legally binding CBA remains unwavering. This isn't just about fair wages; it's about safeguarding the dignity of our profession. We won't back down until our rights are respected. The ball is in the government's court. #ImplementCBA2017

Day 35: The current impasse between healthcare workers and both the National and County governments is a distressing situation that demands urgent attention. The crux of the matter lies in the 2017 collective bargaining agreement, which remains unimplemented despite repeated appeals and negotiations. As healthcare professionals, our primary concern is the welfare of our patients. However, the government's reluctance to honor the terms of the CBA undermines our ability to fulfill our duties effectively. It is disheartening to witness the government's disregard for our legitimate demands, which are essential for ensuring fair compensation, adequate working conditions, and ultimately, the provision of quality healthcare services to all Kenyans. Our decision to continue the strike is not taken lightly. It is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to advocating for our rights and the rights of our patients. We cannot, in good conscience, return to work under conditions that compromise our ability to deliver the standard of care that every Kenyan deserves. Until the government demonstrates a genuine willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue and fulfill its obligations under the CBA, we will persist in our strike action. The plight of Kenyans who rely on our services weighs heavily on our minds. We understand the hardships they face as a result of the ongoing strike, and we empathize with their frustration and concern. However, we firmly believe that our actions are necessary to effect positive change within the healthcare system and secure a better future for all. The health and well-being of Kenyans are at stake, and we cannot afford to stand idly by while our profession and our patients suffer. #DoctorsStrikeKe

As we approach Labour Day tomorrow, it's crucial to acknowledge the significance of this occasion amidst the current socio-economic landscape in Kenya. While Labour Day traditionally serves as a time to honor the contributions of workers, it's essential to recognize that many challenges persist for the labor force. With the ongoing doctors' strike entering its 48th day, the plight of healthcare workers stands as a poignant reminder of the systemic issues facing workers across various sectors. In the face of adversity, these individuals continue to advocate for their rights and fair treatment in the workplace. Labour Day should serve as a platform not only for celebration but also for reflection and action. It's an opportunity for us to unite in solidarity with workers and amplify their voices in demanding better working conditions, fair wages, and respect for their invaluable contributions to society.

INTERNSHIP Payments of interns will be done for the UNCONTESTED cadres. The only payment in DISPUTE is the SRC circular that contravenes KMPDU CBA. We have had several meetings with the Ministry of Health that ended at a deadlock on 31/10/2024. Ministry stuck at SRC circular of 47k-70k gross, and we stood by CBA rate. On 7th/11/2024, we had a 3 hour meeting with Head of Public Service at Harambee house. The engagement was more progressive, and more meetings were scheduled for next week. we shall communicate when we have a concrete outcome. We have to comply with the court orders and negotiate with the ultimate aim of protecting the sanctity of collective bargaining. Currently, negotiations are ongoing in the boardrooms, but it is not unknown to the courts and the government that negotiations are not limited to the boardrooms. We shall negotiate for 45 days in the boardroom, when necessary, we shall begin to negotiate on the streets and finally we shall negotiate at home. We must all be ready to take action. When all other avenues do not work, then the power of workers is in withholding their skills. The cornestone of negotations and dialgoues is in the DEMOSTRATIONS, SIT-INS and STRIKES as envisioned by the industrial court. The internship issue is a litmus test for a bigger problem for the profession. For doctors in all sectors, NGOs, FBOs, private sector, and public sector in equal measure. We must all unite, all the voices count. Professional associations and socities, the time is now. From judgement in October 2024, 45 days ends on 30th November 2024 at SDC. We shall overcome, We are stronger together, Yours in service. Dr Davji Atellah Secretary General KMPDU
