The 21 kidnapped victims, including 15 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have been rescued following a high risk search and rescue operation in a forested area between Egume and Ochaja in Dekina LGA, Kogi State. The victims were abducted by bandits on August 26 along the Alloma–Ajule–Itobe Road in Kogi State. On August 31, a joint force comprising troops of the Nigerian Army's 12 Brigade, personnel of the DSS, and local vigilante groups from Dekina LGA launched a surprise assault on the kidnappers camp. The operation forced the abductors to flee, leaving the captives behind. All 21 victims; eight males and 13 females were successfully rescued and are now safe. The operation adds to the growing number of successful large scale hostage rescue missions carried out by Nigerian security forces in recent months, demonstrating the increasing effectiveness of coordinated intelligence led joint operations against kidnapping networks.

The Sambisa forest alone covers 60,000 square kilometers across several northeastern states, including Borno, Yobe, Gombe, and Bauchi. It's a dense mixture of short trees, thorny bushes, and thick foilage that provides tactical camouflage from aerial surveilance. The NAF carry out painstaking ISR missions to identify targets in these areas and launch precision air interdiction strikes to destroy terrorist structures and weapons caches hidden under the foliage. That's one forest among dozens billeted all over the northeast and northwest. Other notable forests such as the Alawa, Kamuku and Kainji forest reserves have similarly been exploited by bandits and terror groups. The Kainji reserve is of particular concern because it is the gateway to the Southwest. It has become known as the new Sambisa. What was once a mere selected hideout is gradually becoming a stronghold, with JAS reported to have established a bomb making factory. We cannot allow terrorists to embed themselves in this particular forest.

It will be a smart wall, with ground sensors, sentry towers, cameras and drones. Yes, billions of dollars will have to be invested, but in the long run, it will be a small price to pay. Nigeria has spent over ₦33 trillion on defence and national security in the last decade and we will continue pouring billions into security operations with diminishing returns if we do not take the bold step to address our most critical vulnerabilities, our ridiculously porous borders. Securing our borders is not what we can afford to postpone. Its an investment in breaking the cycle of endless conflict, infiltration and replenishment of terrorist networks.

When you hear utterances like "the military men are the unknown gunmen," followed by such simplistic, kindergarten level analysis in the presence of military officials, and the audience applauding, you begin to wonder whether the purpose of the event was genuinely to engage on security issues, or simply to smear and undermine the military. When institutions that should uphold expertise begin rewarding ignorance with prestigious platforms, you know our society is being dumbed down. This is such a low point.

In 2004 when North Korea offered Nigeria ballistic missile technology and was keen to signing an MoU covering defense cooperation, it set off alarm bells in the West, with the U.S and Britain warning Nigeria against buying weapons or accepting deals from North Korea. Even after Nigeria said any military cooperation would aim to protect Nigeria's national territory and denied any interest in nuclear weapons, the U.S was adamant sternly warned Abuja against pursuing military collaboration with Pyongyang, ultimately forcing Nigeria to walk away from the proposed partnership. If North Korea’s offer to share missile technology was enough to set off alarm bells in the West and provoke such strong reactions, imagine the response if Nigeria ever seriously considered pursuing nuclear weapons. No African nation will ever be allowed to develop nuclear weapons capacity. The Treaty of Pelindaba exists for a reason.

The Anglophone power that saved the country's democracy. With Nigeria's outsized influence its easy to forget that West Africa is majority Francophone in terms of the number of countries. Anglophone countries are a minority in the region, and Nigeria is essentially the only English speaking power. Remove Nigeria from the equation, and the region’s leading military powers are overwhelmingly Francophone.

Video of SP Abdurrazak Hassan, Commander of the EOD Unit in Zamfara State, recorded just yesterday before he and his team embarked on an operation that would tragically become his last. He was one of three police officers killed on Monday after their vehicle struck an IED planted by terrorists in Zamfara. The officers were conducting a routine patrol targeting armed groups along the Anka–Bagega axis when one of the police unit’s armoured personnel carriers ran over the IED buried by the terrorists. All three fallen officers were trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists attached to the Zamfara State Police Command. According to reports, following the explosion, armed bandits emerged from the surrounding forest, torched the damaged armoured vehicle, and then retreated back into the bush.

A couple years ago, Nigerian Navy SBS Special Operations Forces trained U.S. Marines in riverine small boat tactics. You won't find Nigerian SBS operators boasting about it, that professionalism speaks for itself. This guy, who came to Nigeria over a decade ago during the early stages of the insurgency, made a YouTube video on the subject a few years back. His outdated and distorted narrative shows he was mid level instructor with a limited grasp of the broader operational picture. The fact that he's still recycling the same talking points speaks volumes about his shallow and immature mindset. You won't find other U.S. instructors making remarks like this. This is clearly someone retired, chasing relevance and validation, recycling outdated talking points.

Great News !! The 21 kidnapped victims, including 15 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have been rescued following a high risk search and rescue operation in a forested area between Egume and Ochaja in Dekina LGA, Kogi State. The victims were abducted by bandits on August 26 along the Alloma–Ajule–Itobe Road in Kogi State. On August 31, a joint force comprising troops of the Nigerian Army's 12 Brigade, personnel of the DSS, and local vigilante groups from Dekina LGA launched a surprise assault on the kidnappers camp. The operation forced the abductors to flee, leaving the captives behind. All 21 victims; eight males and 13 females were successfully rescued and are now safe. The operation adds to the growing number of successful large scale hostage rescue missions carried out by Nigerian security forces in recent months, demonstrating the increasing effectiveness of coordinated intelligence led joint operations against kidnapping networks.
