Gunfire and explosions echoed across Niger’s capital, Niamey, in the early hours of August 29, with sustained fighting reported for more than three hours from around 1:00 a.m. The clashes were heard near Diori Hamani International Airport, the presidential palace and Air Base 101. This is the third time this year that Niamey’s airport and the military base have come under attack. This is coming shortly after a major prisoner exchange involving the FLA-JNIM coalition and the three AES states.

Granted, the 500,000 force projection is somewhat hyperbolic, but increasing the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions is a significant expansion. It represents an unprecedented growth in the Army's force structure, surpassing any previous expansion.

The victims were abducted by bandits on August 26 along the Alloma–Ajule–Itobe Road in Kogi State. On August 31, a joint force comprising troops of the Nigerian Army's 12 Brigade, personnel of the DSS, and local vigilante groups from Dekina LGA launched a surprise assault on the kidnappers camp. The operation forced the abductors to flee, leaving the captives behind. All 21 victims; eight males and 13 females were successfully rescued and are now safe. The NAF carry out painstaking ISR missions to identify targets in these areas and launch precision air interdiction strikes to destroy terrorist structures and weapons caches hidden under the foliage. That's one forest among dozens billeted all over the northeast and northwest. Other notable forests such as the Alawa, Kamuku and Kainji forest reserves have similarly been exploited by bandits and terror groups. The Kainji reserve is of particular concern because it is the gateway to the Southwest. It has become known as the new Sambisa. What was once a mere selected hideout is gradually becoming a stronghold, with JAS reported to have established a bomb making factory. We cannot allow terrorists to embed themselves in this particular forest.

It is difficult to justify terrorist groups in motorized wooden canoes maintaining freedom of movement on a lake bordering a country that possesses Africa's largest navy by fleet size with advanced maritime surveillance capabilities such as the Falcon Eye system. Most of the Nigerian Navy's patrol craft and specialized assets are well suited for operations in the shallow waterways of Lake Chad. The Navy also operates unmanned surface vessels (USVs) and maintains an expeditionary marine force. Lake Chad should be a Nigerian Lake by now. The Nigerian Navy, working in coordination with the army and backed by air power has what it takes to deny terrorist groups the ability to use the lake as a sanctuary and logistical corridor to carry out attacks inland and return to the sanctuary of the Lake.

Nigerian troops, in an operation that involved crossing a river into challenging forest terrain, have stormed an IPOB-linked criminal camp in Abator, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, recovering a cache of firearms, ammunition and materials suspected to be associated with improvised explosive device (IED) production. I agree with you. Even militarily insignificant countries like Tanzania field systems like the 2K12 KUB SAM. The missile homes in on radar emissions transmitted from the launch site and is capable of shooting down aircrafts flying as high as 50,000 ft. Its outdated by modern standards, but its still more capable than the short-range ROLAND SAM system that Nigeria continues to rely on. Niger, Mali, Chad, and even Cameroon field relatively more moderb SAM systems than Nigeria. Yes Nigeria faces no credible conventional aerial threat from its neighbours, that is beside the point. As one of Africa's top 3 ranked military powers alongside Egypt and Algeria, Nigeria's air defence capabilities should reflect its strategic status. Maintaining a modest air defence network is not exactly prohibitively expensive. If our much poorer neighbours can aquire more capable SAM systems, there is no excuse for Nigeria to continue relying on the ROLAND.

Gaddafi once secretly proposed a joint Nigeria-Libya invasion and division of Chad to President Shehu Shagari during an Organization of Africa Unity (OAU) summit. Gaddafi approached Shagari privately and suggested a defense pact between Libya and Nigeria. He believed a joint Nigeria and Libya force would be enough to counter French geopolitical influence in the region. Nigeria and Libya would invade Chad, split the country in half and share it between them. President Shagari was dumbfounded by this aggressive proposal. He quietly rejected the offer, keeping the bizarre interaction classified at the time. Nigeria and Libya actually eventually ended up on opposite sides of the Chadian conflict, with Libya funding separatist rebels and Nigeria scrambling MiG-21 fighter jets to block Libyan forces from annexing the mineral-rich Aouzou Strip in northern Chad in late 1981. When you hear utterances like "the military men are the unknown gunmen," followed by such simplistic, kindergarten level analysis in the presence of military officials, and the audience applauding, you begin to wonder whether the purpose of the event was genuinely to engage on security issues, or simply to smear and undermine the military. When institutions that should uphold expertise begin rewarding ignorance with prestigious platforms, you know our society is being dumbed down. This is such a low point.

NAF A-29 Super Tucanos conducting an operation that shifted from armed overwatch to an interdiction strike hit terrorist positions at Rijana Hill, Kaduna State, on Friday, October 9. The Super Tucanos were providing aerial escort and surveillance for a convoy conveying the GOC, 1 Division, Nigerian Army, and an Air Component Commander when they were abruptly redirected to Rijana Hill following intelligence indicating the convergence of an undetermined number of suspected terrorists in the area. The Super Tucano pilots sighted the terrorists attempting to flee and seek cover upon noticing their aircraft. The Super Tucanos engaged the identified positions with onboard weapons before conducting a further aerial scan of the area. No additional threats were observed during the follow-up assessment, after which the aircraft returned to base.

Video of SP Abdurrazak Hassan, Commander of the EOD Unit in Zamfara State, recorded just yesterday before he and his team embarked on an operation that would tragically become his last. He was one of three police officers killed on Monday after their vehicle struck an IED planted by terrorists in Zamfara. The officers were conducting a routine patrol targeting armed groups along the Anka–Bagega axis when one of the police unit’s armoured personnel carriers ran over the IED buried by the terrorists. All three fallen officers were trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists attached to the Zamfara State Police Command. According to reports, following the explosion, armed bandits emerged from the surrounding forest, torched the damaged armoured vehicle, and then retreated back into the bush.

Footage from JNIM’s attack on the Beninese Army barracks at Koalou-Kourou, which left 12 soldiers dead. Benin has no airforce in practical terms, relying on a small fleet of 11 helicopters. No combat aircraft. JNIM faces no threat from the air, so they enjoy freedom of movement. The Nigerian Air Force will have to step in before the group continues its southward advance toward the coast.

Gunfire and explosions echoed across Niger’s capital, Niamey, in the early hours of August 29, with sustained fighting reported for more than three hours from around 1:00 a.m. The clashes were heard near Diori Hamani International Airport, the presidential palace and Air Base 101. This is the third time this year that Niamey’s airport and the military base have come under attack. This is coming shortly after a major prisoner exchange involving the FLA-JNIM coalition and the three AES states.

The Nigerian Army Silent Drill in Benin was more than a ceremonial display. It was a demonstration of the largest most profesional military in the region. The Anglophone power that saved the country's democracy. With Nigeria's outsized influence its easy to forget that West Africa is majority Francophone in terms of the number of countries. Anglophone countries are a minority in the region, and Nigeria is essentially the only English speaking power. Remove Nigeria from the equation, and the region’s leading military powers are overwhelmingly Francophone.

A long overdue border wall. It will be the largest federal infrastructure project in Nigeria. It's not going to be just concrete and steelwires. It will be a smart wall, with ground sensors, sentry towers, cameras and drones. Yes, billions of dollars will have to be invested, but in the long run, it will be a small price to pay. Nigeria has spent over ₦33 trillion on defence and national security in the last decade and we will continue pouring billions into security operations with diminishing returns if we do not take the bold step to address our most critical vulnerabilities, our ridiculously porous borders. Securing our borders is not what we can afford to postpone. Its an investment in breaking the cycle of endless conflict, infiltration and replenishment of terrorist networks.

A couple years ago, Nigerian Navy SBS Special Operations Forces trained U.S. Marines in riverine small boat tactics. You won't find Nigerian SBS operators boasting about it, that professionalism speaks for itself. This guy, who came to Nigeria over a decade ago during the early stages of the insurgency, made a YouTube video on the subject a few years back. His outdated and distorted narrative shows he was mid level instructor with a limited grasp of the broader operational picture. The fact that he's still recycling the same talking points speaks volumes about his shallow and immature mindset. You won't find other U.S. instructors making remarks like this. This is clearly someone retired, chasing relevance and validation, recycling outdated talking points.
