Two months into the #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC, intense transmission in Ituri province is our primary concern. More than 2,000 cases and almost 800 deaths have been reported. Most new cases are being detected outside known contact lists, and two-thirds of deaths are occurring in communities. World Health Organization (WHO), Africa CDC and partners are supporting Ministère de la Santé RDC to rapidly expand treatment, laboratories, contact tracing and community engagement. But armed conflict is obstructing access and putting patients and responders at risk. Yesterday, an Ebola treatment centre in Bunia was attacked. Health interventions alone will not stop this outbreak. Urgent political action is needed to secure access, protect health workers and scale up the response. Even a temporary ceasefire would help.

Today is a proud moment, as we open the World Health Organization (WHO) Tokyo Office, which will house the UHC Knowledge Hub. The Hub will help to analyze best practices and share knowledge on health financing with countries navigating their own paths toward universal health coverage. In that sense, we are not just opening a building; we are building a bridge to a healthier, safer, fairer and more sustainable future! I thank 厚生労働省 Minister Ueno, Professor 武見 敬三, and the Japanese government for their hospitality, leadership and commitment to our shared vision: the highest attainable standard of health, not as a luxury for some, but a right for all. I also thank our colleagues at the WorldBank for their long-term partnership. #HealthForAll

Lenacapavir is one of the most exciting innovations in the history of #HIV. My congratulations to #SouthAfrica for being among the first countries to launch the national lenacapavir programme. Looking ahead, South Africa has the opportunity not only to scale up access, but to contribute to regional production and supply, strengthening health security across the continent.

So far, eight cases of #hantavirus have been reported, including three deaths. While this is a serious incident, World Health Organization (WHO) assesses the public health risk as low. WHO will continue to work with all relevant governments and partners to provide care for those who are affected, protect the safety and dignity of passengers, and prevent onward spread of the virus.

Digital environments are not neutral. How they are designed, governed and monetized shape the health and wellbeing of our children. President Emmanuel Macron and I published an op-ed on the choices we face to protect children from digital harms while harnessing technology for health:

Yesterday I visited Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, where a separate unit has been prepared to treat #Ebola patients. I'm glad for the opportunity to meet with health workers in charge and thank them for their dedication. I am very happy with all the work invested in preparedness and readiness that I have witnessed. I commend the Government of #Uganda for the work being done to control Ebola and provide care for those affected. Uganda’s leadership has been central to the response, and World Health Organization (WHO) remains committed to supporting national efforts to stop transmission, save lives and protect communities. Mwebale nnyo.

The #hantavirus outbreak is over. However, World Health Organization (WHO) will continue working with governments and partners to advance our understanding of the cause of this outbreak and of hantavirus more generally. My thanks to all countries that supported the response, in line with the International Health Regulations: Argentina, Cabo Verde, Chile, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom. Muchas gracias to Spain, for showing incredible solidarity in supporting the safe disembarkation and repatriation of passengers and crew in Tenerife.

.World Health Organization (WHO) and partners managed to reach Al-Shifa — once the backbone of the health system in #Gaza, which is now an empty shell with human graves after the latest siege. The team witnessed at least five dead bodies during the mission. Most of the buildings in the hospital complex are extensively destroyed and the majority of assets damaged or reduced to ashes. Even restoring minimal functionality in the short term seems implausible. An in-depth assessment by a team of engineers is needed to determine if the remaining buildings are safe for future use. WHO and partners’ recent effort to support the revival of basic services at Al-Shifa are now lost, and people are once again deprived of access to lifesaving health care services. As famine looms, disease outbreaks spread, and trauma injuries increase, WHO urges immediate: - protection of remaining health facilities in Gaza - protection of health and humanitarian workers - additional land crossings to allow access into and across north Gaza - functional deconfliction mechanism - unimpeded access of humanitarian aid into and across the Gaza Strip - ceasefire.

Instead of a coherent and cohesive global response, #COVID19 has been marked by a chaotic patchwork of responses. This is why we need the #PandemicAccord - that countries are now negotiating - to work in cooperation with each other to prepare for and respond to future pandemics.

Yesterday I convened an Emergency Committee on the #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC and #Uganda. The Committee agreed that the situation is a public health emergency of international concern. World Health Organization (WHO) assesses the risk of the epidemic as high at the national and regional levels, and low at the global level.

#Ebola update: more than 1000 confirmed cases have been reported in #DRC, including 254 deaths. 100 patients have recovered so far, which shows that for many, the virus can be stopped with timely health care. In the past month, World Health Organization (WHO), Africa CDC and partners have supported Ministère de la Santé RDC to increase the number of Ebola Treatment Centres and lab and surveillance capacities, to train more health workers on clinical care and infection prevention and control, and to improve the understanding and involvement of communities. But much more is needed: more treatment centres, more trained health and care workers, more testing, more teams from within communities supporting communities. We need sustained and safe access to reach all affected people. We need continued solidarity from international community to end this outbreak. And ultimately, we need peace for the people of DRC.

Thank you to all my friends, colleagues, and everyone who has wished me well during the ordeal in the past few days. I'm especially grateful to the colleagues and airport staff, who were selfless as they tried to protect me. We faced a very dangerous attack, but my United Nations colleagues and I are now safe. We successfully evacuated our wounded colleague to Amman, and he is stable. My heart goes out to our colleagues on the front lines and the civilians who face such danger every day. I am on my way back home to Geneva.

Even without vaccines or specific therapeutics, people can survive #Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus if they receive timely healthcare and seek treatment as soon as symptoms appear. World Health Organization (WHO) and many partners are supporting the establishment of Ebola treatment centres in #DRC. Yesterday, I witnessed the opening of one such centre in Bunia, which will ensure that patients in the community can access lifesaving care. Together, we will stop this outbreak.

Heat affects everyone, but heatwaves can also become a major health hazard for people attending mass gatherings and sporting events. As part of the #FIFAWorldCup, World Health Organization (WHO) has collaborated with FIFA and host countries to protect players, staff and fans from high temperatures. Through the #BeatTheHeat initiative, WHO is supporting the development of action plans, raising awareness, establishing early warning systems, improving access to safe drinking water, and implementing cooling strategies and smart planning.

No country will cede any sovereignty to World Health Organization (WHO). Countries will decide what the #PandemicAccord says, and countries will implement the accord in line with their own national laws. Any opposite claim is quite simply false.
