Even without vaccines or specific therapeutics, people can survive #Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus if they receive timely healthcare and seek treatment as soon as symptoms appear. World Health Organization (WHO) and many partners are supporting the establishment of Ebola treatment centres in #DRC. Yesterday, I witnessed the opening of one such centre in Bunia, which will ensure that patients in the community can access lifesaving care. Together, we will stop this outbreak.

At least 40 million children aged 13 to 15 are already using tobacco products, and 15 million children are using e-cigarettes -- as tobacco and nicotine industries continue to drive addiction, particularly for young people. World #NoTobacco Day is an annual reminder of the harms of tobacco in all its forms. World Health Organization (WHO) calls on governments to act decisively!

My visit in Bunia, eastern #DRC, continues today. I hope to meet as many #Ebola responders as possible. But to people of Ituri, World Health Organization (WHO) is here to listen. We are here to support you, your communities and government end this outbreak. To help you rebuild your health system. You are not alone.

Yesterday I convened an Emergency Committee on the #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC and #Uganda. The Committee agreed that the situation is a public health emergency of international concern. World Health Organization (WHO) assesses the risk of the epidemic as high at the national and regional levels, and low at the global level.

In partnership with Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB), we are scaling up #Ebola diagnostic capacities in the #DRC, and strengthening the laboratory network to deliver real-time data, rapidly identify confirmed cases, save their lives and swiftly contain the outbreak.

So far, eight cases of #hantavirus have been reported, including three deaths. While this is a serious incident, World Health Organization (WHO) assesses the public health risk as low. WHO will continue to work with all relevant governments and partners to provide care for those who are affected, protect the safety and dignity of passengers, and prevent onward spread of the virus.

The Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez rightly so stressed that history will judge us: "And it will say whether we were capable of protecting life when we knew how to do so". We are one humanity. We share the same DNA. We must work together, for #HealthForAll. #WHA79

#Hantavirus is not COVID, and the risk to the people of Tenerife is low because of the nature of the disease and the actions of the Spanish government. I commend Spain’s response, in line with the International Health Regulations, and the strong show of solidarity by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the citizens of the country, and the people of Tenerife. World Health Organization (WHO) will continue supporting in any way possible because this is important for the world and for Tenerife. Solidarity is the best immunity.

Most passengers and crew of the MV Hondius cruise ship successfully disembarked today. I’m grateful to Ministers Mónica García, Fernando Grande-Marlaska and Ángel Víctor Torres Pérez, their Ministerio de Sanidad, Ministerio del Interior and Ministerio P. Territorial y M. Democrática teams, and the whole government of #Spain for their leadership and technical excellence shown throughout this operation. World Health Organization (WHO) continues to work closely with experts in all involved countries, as coordination remains key to keeping passengers, crew, responders and communities healthy and safe. #hantavirus

For us, change is a constant, and we will continue to change – not for the sake of change, but for the sake of the countries and people we serve. That is why we have chosen as the theme for this year’s World Health Assembly, “Reshaping global health: a shared responsibility”. #WHA79

My update on the #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC and #Uganda to the #WHA79 delegates ⬇️ This outbreak, alongside the hantavirus one, shows why international threats need an international response, why the world needs the International Health Regulations, and why it needs World Health Organization (WHO).

#WHA79 delegates met this week against a backdrop of outbreaks, conflict, division, uncertainty and constrained resources. That is exactly the point of multilateralism: not to pretend the difficulties of our world are not there, but to address them together. That is not automatic. It is a choice. A choice to prioritise health. A choice to recognise that no country can address today’s health challenges alone. A choice to work through World Health Organization (WHO), not only as an institution, but as a shared platform for shared action. I thank you for that choice.

Viruses do not respect borders. I thank Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez not only for meeting #Spain’s legal duty under international law, but also for exercising his moral duty to show solidarity with, and compassion and kindness for, the passengers on MV Hondius cruise ship. Our work is not over. World Health Organization (WHO) will continue to work closely with experts in all affected countries. Our strongest immunity is solidarity.

Multilateralism is not easy. But it’s worth it. #WHA79

.World Health Organization (WHO) and partners managed to reach Al-Shifa — once the backbone of the health system in #Gaza, which is now an empty shell with human graves after the latest siege. The team witnessed at least five dead bodies during the mission. Most of the buildings in the hospital complex are extensively destroyed and the majority of assets damaged or reduced to ashes. Even restoring minimal functionality in the short term seems implausible. An in-depth assessment by a team of engineers is needed to determine if the remaining buildings are safe for future use. WHO and partners’ recent effort to support the revival of basic services at Al-Shifa are now lost, and people are once again deprived of access to lifesaving health care services. As famine looms, disease outbreaks spread, and trauma injuries increase, WHO urges immediate: - protection of remaining health facilities in Gaza - protection of health and humanitarian workers - additional land crossings to allow access into and across north Gaza - functional deconfliction mechanism - unimpeded access of humanitarian aid into and across the Gaza Strip - ceasefire.
