⭕️ U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio complained that Iran was spending its resources to bolster allies in the “Axis of Resistance” rather than on the domestic needs of its citizens. Alan Eyre, a former senior U.S. diplomat and the State Department’s first Persian-language spokesperson, pointed to the irony: “…says the country seeking a USD 1.5 trillion dollar ‘war’ budget.” Eyre spent much of his 40-year government career working on Iran and Middle East policy. Rubio also said Sunday that Washington remains open to diplomacy, but that the MOU could not be considered “alive” while Iran was attacking ships and restricting passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He claimed Tehran had sent signals through direct and indirect channels that it wanted to negotiate, but said Washington would continue its military response unless Iran changed course.

More than 21,000 Palestinian children have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. A UN Commission of Inquiry found that, by October 2025 alone, Israel had killed at least 5,031 children under the age of five, including 1,029 infants under one year old and around 420 newborns. The US-Israeli war on Palestinian children continues on day 1,019.

🇪🇹 Thousands in Addis Ababa Protest Alleged Forced Recruitment in Tigray Thousands rallied in Ethiopia’s capital on Saturday against an alleged campaign of forced conscription by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), in a pro-government protest organized by a coalition of Tigrayan opposition parties. Tigray is a mountainous region in northern Ethiopia, bordering Eritrea and home to some 6 million people. From 2020 to 2022, it was the center of one of this century’s deadliest wars. The TPLF had dominated Ethiopia’s national government for nearly three decades before falling out with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, whose rise to power in 2018 ended the party’s dominance. Fighting erupted in November 2020, drawing in Ethiopian federal forces and troops from neighboring Eritrea, the TPLF’s longtime enemy. Estimates of the dead range from roughly 160,000 to as high as 600,000, with many dying from direct fighting, and also from starvation and the collapse of healthcare during the war and federal blockade. A November 2022 peace agreement ended the fighting but left major underlying disputes unresolved. Now the region is sliding back toward confrontation. The TPLF reasserted control over Tigray’s political administration on May 5, displacing the federal-backed interim administration established under the peace deal, and issued a June proclamation mandating military service. Human Rights Watch reported on July 6 that Tigrayan authorities and forces have been abducting and forcibly recruiting civilians, including boys as young as 15, through nighttime raids on homes and recruitment drives at offices and gold-mining sites. Protesters in Addis Ababa carried banners reading, “The Ethiopian government must fulfil its duty to protect the people of Tigray.” The federal government has separately accused the TPLF of sending fighters to Sudan, without providing evidence, with protestors holding signs reading “Stop trafficking combatants to Sudan!” 🎥 Melat Kiros, the Ethiopian-born, Tigrayan-American Democratic nominee for Denver’s overwhelmingly Democratic congressional district, recently spoke with Drop Site about her upbringing, her family’s experience during the devastating war in Tigray, and the catastrophic humanitarian crisis it left behind. 🚨 NEW: Israeli strike hits makeshift shelter in hospital building Three Palestinians were killed and several others wounded, including children, after an Israeli strike hit a makeshift shelter in the Al-Yemen Al-Saeed Hospital building in Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. “The children were having fun and playing football, and suddenly they started screaming,” eyewitness Youssef Akasha told Drop Site contributor Mohamed Ahmed. Akasha, who was meters away, described two consecutive explosions. “We found many children lying on the ground, women screaming, and young men running to rescue the wounded,” he said. “At this time, children usually play and have fun.” Akasha said the area around the shelter, near Israel’s declared “yellow line,” is subjected to daily gunfire, shelling and raids. “I don’t feel like there is a ceasefire at all.” At least eight Palestinians have been killed and more than 20 wounded in Israeli attacks across Gaza since this morning. 🎥 Mohammed Ahmed filmed the aftermath for Drop Site.

🎥 Crisis Group’s Ali Vaez asked why Iran would “sacrifice” a supposedly generous U.S. deal over control of the Strait of Hormuz, including a southern corridor handling at best 20% of traffic. Vali Nasr rejected the premise, arguing Tehran concluded early that Washington never intended to honor the MOU and was using it to catch its breath before another war. Nasr said Iran had expected another Israeli/U.S. round by October. Instead, it came much sooner. He identified four signals that convinced Tehran the MOU was never going to be implemented: 1️⃣ No money arrived. No frozen Iranian funds were released. Nasr said one person told him that if chief negotiator Qalibaf had returned from Doha with even $1 billion, “the conversation in Iran would have been very different.” Two months of oil waivers do little to change Iran’s economic position. 2️⃣ Lebanon showed Tehran the U.S. would not honor what it signed. Nasr said Washington agreed to provisions on Lebanon in the MOU, then almost immediately helped create conditions for Israel to operate there with the Lebanese government’s approval, effectively stripping Iran of leverage. 3️⃣ The U.S. began rebuilding for war immediately after signing. Military assets poured into the region in a pattern Tehran recognized from the buildup before February. Nasr said the rhetoric around diplomacy was simply not matched by what Iran was seeing militarily. 4️⃣ Washington began “whittling down” Iran’s control of Hormuz. Nasr stressed two separate moves: the U.S. encouraged tankers not to coordinate with Iran at all, then pushed them toward the southern channel. Iran drew the line. Washington responded with a massive escalation, targeting missile and drone batteries in an effort to take control of the strait out of its hands. 🔸Vali Nasr’s key point: Iran does not see this as a choice between economic benefits and Hormuz. In Tehran’s view, there were no economic benefits to “sacrifice” because Washington was never going to deliver them. And without control of Hormuz, Iran believes it has no leverage to force the U.S. to implement any future deal. As Nasr put it, control of the strait gives Iran a “sword of Damocles over the head of the global economy” that Tehran sees as “essential” to getting anything from Washington. 💢 Iran’s Foreign Ministry Strongly Rejects Attempts to Justify U.S. Breach of Commitments Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei, responding to Tasnim: 🔹 Clause 5 of the memorandum of understanding affirmed Iran’s right to manage the Strait of Hormuz. 🔹 Analyses seeking to cast doubt on the text of the memorandum effectively help justify the United States’ breach of commitments and violation of the agreement. 🔹 The document is brief, consisting of 14 clauses, and is completely explicit, with no ambiguity. 🔹 Clause 5 clearly emphasizes Iran’s responsibility for the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, in consultation with Oman and through dialogue with regional countries. No other interpretation can be drawn from it. 🔹 The text leaves no grounds for excuses by the U.S. side. 🇲🇱 Militants Kill at Least 50 Malian Soldiers in Convoy Ambush Al-Qaeda-linked and separatist fighters ambushed a Malian army convoy on Saturday in the northern Gao region, killing at least 50 soldiers and capturing more than 20 others, according to the army and local accounts. The landlocked West African nation is twice the size of Texas and has fought a spreading insurgency across its northern deserts for more than a decade. The convoy was traveling from the recently recaptured town of Anefis toward Gao when it was struck near Tabankort. Local area leader Mubarak Sayel said in interviews that militants killed 50 soldiers and captured at least 24 more, a toll that was later confirmed by AFP. Both the al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM and the Tuareg separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) claimed the assault as a joint operation, saying they inflicted “great human losses” and destroyed army vehicles. The army said its partners, a reference to Russia’s Africa Corps mercenaries (which replaced the Wagner Group), were also hit. The two groups want different things, JNIM to impose hardline Islamist rule, the FLA an independent Tuareg state in the north called Azawad, but have increasingly fought side by side against the government. Mali’s military junta seized power in coups in 2020 and 2021, expelled French and UN peacekeeping forces, and turned to Russian mercenaries to fight the insurgents. The pivot has not stemmed the violence: large stretches of the country remain outside state control, and the ambush ranks among the army’s heaviest single losses of the war. 💢 Seven killed as Ukrainian drones strike Wildberries, Russia’s Amazon Seven warehouse workers were killed and about two dozen wounded when Ukrainian drones struck a logistics center run by the Russian online retailer Wildberries in Kotovsk, in Russia’s Tambov region, the regional governor said. Wildberries is Russia’s largest e-commerce company. The workers were on a night shift. A second Wildberries facility was hit in Elektrostal, about 30 miles east of Moscow, sending a massive plume of black smoke over the capital region, the company said. See footage attached. The Moscow region governor said 24 people were wounded there and two more at an oil depot in nearby Noginsk. Moscow’s mayor said more than 370 drones flew toward the capital region overnight. Ukraine’s military has not commented.
