Pope Leo XIV held his first meeting with Dame Sarah Mullally, the new Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to lead the Church of England and the Anglican Communion. During their audience at the Vatican, the Pope encouraged Catholics and Anglicans to continue the path of dialogue and unity, acknowledging that new challenges have made full communion more difficult. He warned that it would be a “scandal” not only to fail in the common mission of making Christ known, but also to stop working to overcome divisions, “no matter how intractable they may appear.”

At today's General Audience, Pope Leo XIV reflected on Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the sacred liturgy, and urged priests to respect the texts and norms of the Mass. The Holy Father reminded priests not to alter the liturgy “on their own initiative,” warning that such changes can create confusion among the faithful.

With visible emotion, Pope Leo XIV closes the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica—the last one still open—marking the end of the Jubilee of Hope 2025. Crossed by over 33 million pilgrims, the door had been opened by Pope Francis on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. The 27th ordinary Jubilee in the history of the Catholic Church—and the second of the 21st century—comes to a close on the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord.

Madrid witnessed something extraordinary today: Pope Leo XIV carrying our Eucharistic Lord through its streets on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. As thousands followed in prayer and adoration, the scene reflected the beauty of this ancient feast. But Madrid was not alone. Across the world, Catholics gathered to carry Jesus in the Eucharist through their streets, publicly proclaiming their faith in His Real Presence. Corpus Christi is more than a tradition—it is living faith made visible. Wherever the Eucharistic Lord was carried in procession today, in Madrid, throughout Spain, throughout the world, there beat the heart of the Church.

A lighthearted moment marked the opening of the Extraordinary Consistory. As Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, headed to the wrong microphone, Pope Leo XIV gestured toward the main podium. As the the 92-year-old Cardinal hurried across the audience hall floor, Pope Leo jokingly laughed and said, "In front of everyone, Your Eminence!" The Cardinal then delivered his address with his trademark strong voice. Pope Leo subsequently opened the Extraordinary Consistory, calling for honest dialogue, unity, and a synodal spirit of listening. He asked the cardinals for their "strong, explicit, and public" support as they reflect on evangelization, peace, and the Church's mission in today's world. Read more 👉

In remarks to journalists in Castel Gandolfo, a reporter asked Pope Leo XIV why he had not prayed “at least not visibly” during his visit to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul. The Pope smiled and replied: “Who said that I didn’t pray? … And perhaps I am praying even now.” He then clarified: “In fact, I prefer to pray in a Catholic church, in the presence of the Most Blessed Sacrament,” calling the attention given to that moment “a bit… curious.”

The Borso d’Este Bible, one of the supreme masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance, was formally presented to Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican during an institutional ceremony attended by the President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa. The encounter took on a particularly touching note when Pope Leo gently reached for the manuscript, carefully asking whether gloves were required and if he might turn its pages. Reassured that the precious volume could be handled, the Pope leafed through the codex with evident reverence, observing various Bible passages and illuminations. Commissioned in the 15th century by Borso d’Este, Duke of Ferrara, the lavishly illuminated Bible—celebrated for its gold embellishments and Afghan lapis lazuli miniatures—stands as a pinnacle of European manuscript art, uniting exceptional artistic refinement, historical significance, and profound spiritual symbolism. It is rarely displayed outside its permanent home at the Estense Library in Modena.

Pope Leo invoked the Pardon of Assisi, an indulgence linked to Saint Francis of Assisi. He recalled that the Saint obtained this grace from "Pope Honorius III in 1216," inspired by a vision of Jesus and the Virgin Mary while praying at the Porziuncola. In this context, he invited the faithful to value this spiritual gift, especially on the occasion of the eighth centenary of the death of the saint of Assisi. "Let us give thanks to the Lord for this great gift. And let us treasure it, especially on the eighth centenary of the passing of the Little Poor Man of Assisi," he said.

For the first time in 57 years, a pope has attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Pontifical Swiss Guard. Pope Leo XIV took part in the event held in the San Damaso Courtyard at the Vatican. The 27 new recruits pledged their loyalty before the Holy Father — marking the first papal presence at the ceremony since Paul VI in 1968.

In a candid moment, Pope Leo blessed the traditional Armenian offering of bread and salt—and, after asking the Armenian Patriarch Sahak II if he should eat the piece, he did. This was the first event of his fourth and final day in Türkiye (Turkey): a prayer visit to the Armenian Apostolic Cathedral, where he was welcomed with the customary gift of bread and salt. In Armenian tradition, bread symbolizes life and God’s generous blessing, while salt represents purity, loyalty, incorruptibility, and faithful relationships. To “eat salt and bread together” means to seal a bond of lasting trust and peace. In Armenian spirituality, this call to hospitality is rooted in Abraham welcoming the three angels, the Gospel invitation to receive Christ in every stranger, and the monastic tradition of caring for pilgrims.

During his pastoral visit to Lampedusa, Pope Leo XIV stopped to pray at the “Door of Europe,” the monument overlooking the Mediterranean and remembering the many migrants who have crossed these waters in search of safety. Then, with the wind blowing strongly across the island’s rocky coast, the Pope walked toward the sea. Climbing over the rocks in his white cassock, he looked out over the Mediterranean — the same sea that for so many has been a place of fear, hope, tragedy, and salvation. At one point, the wind even carried away his zucchetto, quickly rescued by his secretary, Ed. But Pope Leo kept climbing to look out to the sea. A simple moment. And yet a powerful image: the Pope standing before the waters that carry the suffering, the dreams, and the lives of so many migrants.

Pope Leo XIV began his third day in Türkiye with a historic visit to Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque, entering a Muslim place of worship for the first time as pope. He removed his shoes at the entrance (he actually wears white socks!), following local custom, and according to the mosque’s muezzin, who guided him through the building, he gently declined an invitation to offer a prayer there.
