BREAKING NEWS: The blood of Saint Januarius has liquefied in Naples ahead of Pope Leo’s visit for the first anniversary of his election as pope. During a packed liturgy in the cathedral, the pope held the reliquary aloft and displayed the liquefied relic for the faithful, a gesture many Neapolitans read as a sign of protection and hope for their city. The famous “miracle of San Gennaro” traditionally occurs three times a year—on the saint’s feast day in mid‑September, in December, and in May—and it also famously happened during Pope Francis’ visit to Naples in 2015, a moment many interpreted as a special blessing for the city.

There is a long-standing tradition for pilgrims to trade zucchettos (the white head covering) with the recent popes. This takes place commonly during the General Audiences in St. Peter’s Square. Pope Leo has chosen typically to place the gifted zucchetto upon his head for a few moments before returning it to the pilgrim. Finally, at Wednesday’s General Audience, Pope Leo traded the zucchetto he was wearing and continued to wear the one gifted to him. His Holiness ended the moment with an impromptu high-five.

You can tell the crowd had been waiting for this. During his apostolic trip to Africa, Pope Leo has already shown off his English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish — but this afternoon he unlocked a new language: Kimbundu, a Bantu language spoken in Angola. He said: “Mama Muxima, tueza kokué, Mama Muxima, tutambululé,” which means: “Mother of the heart, we come to you; Mother of the heart, receive us.” The crowd erupted in applause. Hey Duolingo we couldn’t find Kimbundu on your app… any plans?

As the most senior cardinal bishop under the age of 80, Cardinal Pietro Parolin presides over the conclave and is the first to take his oath of secrecy and fidelity in the Sistine Chapel. The 70-year-old Vatican Secretary of State serves as the chief conductor of the proceedings until a new pope is elected, a role similar to what Joseph Ratzinger held in 2005 before becoming Pope Benedict XVI.

"La Mamma è sempre con noi!" “Our Mother is always with us!” With simple and tender words, at the feet of Our Lady of the Rosary, Pope Leo XIV turned a simple greeting into a small catechesis of the heart: when we walk with Mary, we are never alone.

During the Chrism Mass, Pope Leo XIV breathes over the sacred chrism oil—a gesture known as insufflation. This ancient sign recalls Christ breathing the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. It symbolizes the Spirit’s presence sanctifying the oil, which will be used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders, marking the faithful with the seal of Christ.

On April 20, we received Pope Francis's final blessing. He died the following day. It was an Urbi et Orbi blessing for Easter Sunday. It was also an Urbi et Orbi blessing he first gave us in 2013 after his papal election. One month after his passing, we continue to pray for his eternal rest.
