Economist Stephen Moore claims BLS overestimated Biden job numbers by 1.5M. Unfortunately, he commits numerous errors. Over Biden's 4 yrs, the BLS initially underestimated jobs by 700k from the initial monthly estimate compare to the most recent benchmark.

I think we now have real evidence that AI exposure is associated with job decline for age <25. The Canary in the Coalmine paper addresses a lot of concerns. While economic science takes time; now is the time to think about policy responses. Erik Brynjolfsson Bharat Chandar Ruyu Chen

Despite a larger increase in the young college unemployment rate, non-college young workers have dropped out of the labor force. Overall? All young people saw job declines by the same rate. This isn't a college story. It's an early career story. Adam Ozimek Nathan Goldschlag 🧵

No Planet Money! Not the Fake Graph! You can't compare mean productivity to median wages. When we do compare mean to mean, the gap disappears. Real median wages are not stagnating either. We need accurate data to solve today's very real problems. NPR's Planet Money

Economic research finds rent control benefits higher income earners by converting apartments into expensive condos. Unlike other controversies, econ theory, 50 yrs of data testing, and a simple supply & demand model all tell the same story. We need to 🏗️ 🏘️ not mess with prices.

Economics still can't predict nor control recessions & inflation very well. But it sure knows a thing about trade. Using a simple Ricardian gravity model of trade along with digitized cuneiform accounting records, we have new evidence for the location of lost Anatolian cities.

This is really fascinating. Forest and grassland converted to crops in 19th cent. 20th cent urbanization. But also notice some re-forestation in TX and South East. After 1920, total forested land is fairly stable. This was a lot of fun to make. Data from Hanqin Tian et al.

Deportations lowered demand for 🏠. But they likely lowered the supply of 🏠 by even more. Net effect? Increased prices. We've tested this. Given that the U.S. stopped 🏗️ 🏘️ 15 years ago, I'd say it's housing supply, not recent immigration demand that is the primary cause.

Nobody lied here. Please read tables more carefully. You say private grocery data (Datasembly: 2.7%) is higher than BLS (1.9%.) But Truflation is at 1.5%. Also, I think the OER complaints are valid, but their effects may not be that big. Zillow inflation is down. Zachary Foust

Claudia's Nobel winning research is economics at its best! Covering a previously understudied field; working towards greater equality; holistic in its approach; using both wide empirics, formal theory, as well as historical narratives; a generous mentor...and she's got a Goldie!

Are the economic Degrowth scholars actually choosing the "decent" standard of living they advocate for? Do they not have dryers, dishwashers, or TVs? If not, well... there's an "h" word for that. This entire literature is a distraction from real environmental solutions.

Sen. Rand Paul claims food stamp spending doubled "an alarming trend." But this relies on 4 mistakes. 1. Graph can't replicate. 2. Need to Adj for Inflation 3. Economy is now bigger. 4. Share of pop on food stamps actually declined. Conclusion: There is no trend.

Who are economists voting for? There are many different views. 27 nobels endorsed Harris. None have endorsed Trump. One worry is the firing of professional civil servants to be replaced by partisan loyalists. This happened in Argentina in 2007 leading to 17 yrs of high inflation.

Economic majors earn a higher salary out of college than any other business related major. Why’s that? Economics gives you skills that employers are looking for because you can apply it to various different subjects and gives you a different perspective at the market.
