Elon Musk: Everything is solar power. The rest is noise. “The sun is about 99.8% of the mass of the solar system. Jupiter's about 0.1% and everything else is in the remaining 0.1%, and we are much less than 0.1%. So, if you burnt all of the mass of the solar system, then the total energy produced by the sun would still round up to 100%. If you just burnt Earth, the whole planet, and burnt Jupiter, which is very big and quite challenging to burn, turn Jupiter into a thermonuclear reactor, the sun is 99.8% of the mass of the solar system and everything else is in the miscellaneous category. Basically, no matter what you do, total energy produced in our solar system rounds up to 100% from the sun. You could even throw another Jupiter in, so we're going to snag a Jupiter from somewhere else, you could teleport two more Jupiters into our solar system, burn them, and the sun would still round up to 100%. As long as you're at 99.6%, you're still rounding up to 100%. Maybe that gives some perspective of why solar is really the thing that matters. And, as soon as you start thinking about things at a grander scale, like Kardashev Scale 2 civilizations, it becomes very, very obvious. I'm not saying anything that's new, by the way. Anyone who studies physics has known this for a very long time. In fact, Kardashev, a Russian physicist who came up with this idea, I think, in the 1960s, just as a way to classify civilizations, where Kardashev Scale 1 would be, you've harnessed most of the energy of the planet, Kardashev Scale 2, you've harnessed most of the energy of your sun, Kardashev 3, you've harnessed most of the energy of a galaxy. Now we're only about 1% or a few percent of Kardashev Scale 1 right now, optimistically. But as soon as you go to Kardashev Scale 2, where you're talking about the power of the sun, then you're really just saying everything is solar power and the rest is in the noise. Like, the sun produces about a billion times, or call it well over a billion times more energy than everything on Earth combined.” All-In Podcast, October 31, 2025

Andrej Karpathy on Elon's management style: If you have a big person who is also really smart and has a big hammer, things move quickly. “He hates meetings. He keeps telling people to skip meetings if they're not useful. He has a very good intuition for streamlining processes, making everything efficient —the best part is no part— simplifying, focusing, and just removing barriers, moving very quickly, and making big moves. I do think you need someone in a powerful position with a big hammer like Elon, who's the cheerleader for that idea and ruthlessly pursues it. If no one has a big enough hammer, everything turns into committees, democracy within the company, processes, talking to stakeholders, decision-making, everything just crumbles. If you have a big person who is also really smart and has a big hammer, things move quickly.” Lex Fridman Podcast, October 22, 2022

Elon Musk: Legacy media are very effective at making people believe things that aren't true. “Unfortunately, what I've learned is that legacy media propaganda is very effective at making people believe things that aren't true. For example, how many legacy media publications, talk shows, whatever, tried to claim that I was a Nazi because of some random hand gesture at a rally where all I said was that my heart goes out to you. I was talking about space travel, and yet legacy media promoted that as though that was a deliberate Nazi gesture. In fact, every politician, any public speaker who's spoken for any length of time has made the exact same gesture. I've never harmed a single person.” Interview with David Faber, May 20, 2025

Elon Musk: We use only a tiny fraction of the energy we receive from the sun. “The Earth is almost entirely solar-powered today. The only reason we're not a frozen ice ball at three kelvins is because of the sun. And the sun is responsible for all precipitation. It's responsible for the vast majority of the ecosystem, apart from chemotrophs, at the bottom of the ocean. There's just a tiny amount of energy that people consume to power civilization. It's actually a very tiny amount of energy relative to the amount of energy that the sun sends in our general direction.” Interview at the Computer History Museum, 2013

Elon Musk: I'm not sure people totally understand how big Starship is. “I'm not sure people totally understand. Starship is the largest flying object ever made. This thing will be over 5,000 tons of weight on liftoff. It's going to go straight up with 5,000 tons. This is much heavier than any aircraft, by far. No aircraft comes close to this weight. And it's going straight up. Aircraft can't go straight up. It will have more than twice the thrust of a Saturn V. It's a big rocket.” The Joe Rogan Experience, February 11, 2021

Elon Musk: I wouldn't use the Wall Street Journal to line my cage for parrot droppings. “Is there a worse publication on the face of the Earth than the Wall Street Journal? I wouldn't use that to line my cage for parrot droppings. That newspaper is the worst newspaper in the world. If there's one newspaper that should be pro-capitalist, it's the one with Wall Street in the name of. But it isn't. So I have the very lowest opinion of the Wall Street Journal. Absolute nonsense.” Interview at the Qatar Economic Forum, May 20, 2025

Elon Musk, 13 years ago: A fully and rapidly reusable rocket is barely possible. SpaceX is going to try to do it. We could fail, but we're going to try to do it. “The pivotal breakthrough that's necessary, that some company has to come up with to make life multiplanetary, is a fully and rapidly reusable orbit-class rocket. This is a very difficult thing to do because we live on a planet where that is just barely possible. If gravity were a little lower, it would be easy. If it was a little higher, it would be impossible. It's just a very tough engineering problem. I wasn't sure it could be solved for a while. But then, relatively recently, probably in the last twelve months or so, I've come to the conclusion that it can be solved. And I think, SpaceX is going to try to do it. Now, we could fail. I'm not saying we're certain of success here, but we're going to try to do it. And we have a design that, on paper, doing the calculations, doing the simulations, it does work. And now, we need to make sure that those simulations and reality agree, because generally when they don't, reality wins.” National Press Club, 2011

Peter Thiel: The consensus in Washington is that DOGE is going nowhere, but I'd say you should never bet against Elon. “The strong consensus view in the D.C. establishment is that this is going to go nowhere. That it's just absolutely impossible to fix things, and this is going to be a very frustrating dead end. The alternate view, I would say, is you should never bet against Elon. We all know there's an extraordinary amount of waste, and it is unsustainable. The 6% GDP deficits the US has cannot be sustained. They probably cannot even be sustained for even the rest of this decade. There are two ways to resolve them. You can cut spending and cut waste, or you can raise taxes massively. I take this election in the US for standing for the proposition we're not going to go the European-style socialist route of having massive tax hikes. That suggests you need to try something like the DOGE thing. And that's actually what is going to happen.” Interview with Piers Morgan Uncensored, December 12, 2024

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon: Elon is our Einstein. It's rational he checks our government efficiency. “You’ve got to look at Elon, at SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink – the guy is our Einstein. I'd like to be helpful to him and his companies as much as we can. I think it is completely rational for someone to look at our government and say it's been ineffective. We deserve good government, and I don't think anyone thinks sending another trillion dollars to Washington, D.C., will lead to good government. The government needs to be more accountable. It needs to be more efficient. It should be outcomes-based. I mean, I'd say [go] department by department. I wish them the best. It's going to be complicated. The federal government's complicated. You read about all the people in it. And so, you know, if we could be helpful to them, I'd love to be helpful to them.” Jamie Dimon on CNBC, January 22, 2025

Elon Musk: A lot of companies are honey traps for talented engineers. Tesla and SpaceX aren't honey traps. We're demanding and you'll get a lot of shit done. “I consider one of my core responsibilities running companies to have an environment where great engineers can flourish. I think in a lot of companies, maybe most companies, if somebody's a really talented, driven engineer, their talents are suppressed. At some of the companies the engineering talent is suppressed in a way that is maybe not obviously bad, but where it's just so comfortable and you're paid so much money but the output you actually have to produce is so low that it's like a honey trap. There's a few honey trap places in Silicon Valley where they don't necessarily seem like bad places for engineers, but you have to say a good engineer went in and what did they get out? And the output of that engineering talent seems very low, even though they seem to be enjoying themselves. That's why I call it, there's a few honey trap companies in Silicon Valley. Tesla is not a honey trap. We're demanding and you're going to get a lot of shit done. And it's gonna be really cool and it's not gonna be easy, but if you are a super-talented engineer, your talents will be used, I think to a greater degree than anywhere else. SpaceX is also that way.” Tesla AI Day, September 30, 2022

Elon Musk: Starship 3 will cost less per flight than Falcon 1 but has 400 times the payload. “One of the most profound things is that Starship 3 will cost less per flight than Falcon 1. That's the difference between a fully reusable rocket or an expendable rocket. The fully reusable rocket with low-cost propellant and autogenous pressurization actually costs less than a tiny expendable rocket. Falcon 1 is about half a ton to orbit. The Starship 3 will be 400 times more payload for less than the cost of a Falcon 1. Ultimately, I think we might be able to get the cost per flight to Earth orbit down to around $2 or $3 million. These are unthinkable numbers. Nobody ever thought this was possible but we're not breaking any physics to achieve this.” SpaceX Update, April 4, 2024

Elon Musk: What happens in Britain sounds crazy. “In Britain – I kid you not, how can this be real? – they are releasing convicted pedophiles from prison in order to put people in prison for Facebook posts. There were, and I'm simply stating a fact, there were migrant rape gangs in England. That were gangs that would run around and prey on young girls, gang rape them. And some people found that objectionable, which should be objectionable. And they were upset about that, and so they complained about it online and were sent to prison. That sounds crazy.” Interview with Tucker Carlson, October 7, 2024

Elon Musk: This is a new era in space exploration. “I do think what this heralds really is fundamentally a new era in spaceflight, a new era in space exploration. We're going to go to the moon, we're going to have a base on the moon, we're going to send people to Mars and make life multiplanetary. This day heralds a new age of space exploration.” Elon Musk welcoming Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley back from SpaceX Dragon’s first crewed flight in Houston, August 2, 2020,

Elon Musk in 2011: I really want SpaceX to help make life multiplanetary. “I think that a future where humanity is a space-faring civilization out there, exploring the stars, is an incredibly exciting future and inspiring. That's what we're trying to help make happen. I really want SpaceX to help make life multiplanetary. I'd like to see a self-sustaining base on Mars.” Interview with The Wall Street Journal, 2011
