Becerra's full non-edited answer when asked whether he'll commit to funding healthcare for undocumented Californians: "Every time people ask 'will you commit to this? Will you promise to that?' That may get you elected but it's not the way you govern." "I made it very clear I was going to be the healthcare governor for California.I made it very clear I want California to be the backstop for all families who need access to healthcare." "But you want me to make a commitment to families without knowing what the budget will be? Without knowing where the votes are? That's just playing politics the wrong way.." "I will take this very seriously...Am I committed to committed to make sure families don't lose their healthcare? Not only that, I am committed to expand it so more families have access to healthcare." "But guys (looks at CA press corps), don't play this game about asking me to commit because I did not get elected doing that. A lot of other folks made these wild promises, and they're not the governor-elect." "I cannot make a commitment without knowing what exactly I face because I don't think any voter, any taxpayer, any Californian wants to have a governor who is still acting like a politician." What's next for Steve Hilton? At a press conference outside the California State Capitol in Sacramento this morning, Hilton quoted the famous line of Fmr. Gov Arnold Arnold Schwarzenegger: "I'll be back." Hilton's future? He said he's "in this for the long term, whether that is as a candidate, a leader, a policy maker, maybe all of those things. Nothing is off the table." Hilton: "Californians want change... I wish Xavier Becerra well and I hope he can and will bring the change that people want to see in California...I hope he does that. I'll support him if he does that."

I want to be clear: I would have preferred not to make this video. I am sharing it to explain my upcoming coverage of the race for California state controller, including my efforts to interview incumbent Malia Cohen (D-CA) and why my candidate interview coverage of this office will feature only her challenger, Herb Morgan (R-CA). I would have preferred to produce a piece giving both candidates equal time. Those are journalistic values that guide me every day. After weeks of outreach and back-and-forth with Cohen’s team, a Zoom interview was scheduled, then abruptly canceled by her team. I was told she had no availability to reschedule before the election. Her team said I could submit written questions for Cohen to answer in writing. I respectfully declined because I wanted voters to hear directly from her on camera, with the opportunity for follow-up questions. I told her team multiple times I wanted to ensure voters heard her side, her priorities, and answer why she deserves a second term in office. I made every effort to make that happen. Fairness is always my priority. My goal was to give both candidates the same opportunity to discuss their records, answer meaningful and tough questions, and speak directly to voters. I regret that I could not make that happen, but voters deserve transparency about the process.

ELECTION 2026: Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra (D-CA) is on the campaign trail this morning in Modesto alongside U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-San Diego). The three are campaigning for Rep. Adam C. Gray (D-Merced), who is facing Republican challenger and former Stockton Mayor Mayor Kevin J Lincoln (R-Merced). “I feel very good,” Becerra said when asked about his closing message to voters. “Donald Trump is on the ballot, make no mistake,” he added. "I feel very good," said Becerra on his chances to win. "Donald Trump is on the ballot, make no mistake," Becerra added. Gray: "We're going to send a message to Washington that what's going on there is not working for us."

ELECTION 2026: California's next governor will inherit a state budget heavily reliant on volatile capital gains tax revenue from the stock market, raising questions about how the state would weather a potential stock market downturn. I asked Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra (D-CA) whether he is concerned a market decline could result in cuts to state programs or tax increases. Becerra acknowledged market volatility but added "the markets go up and down, they are volatile. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. Government cannot be that way. We have to be steady." He pledged to “provide for schools" and ensure “healthcare stays available for everybody” while vowing the following: "We're not going to overspend. We're going to make sure we're fiscally prudent."

ELECTION 2026: CA Gubernatorial Candidate Steve Hilton (R-CA) vows to abolish the CA DMV if elected governor. "We are going to shut down this bloated, nanny-state bureaucratic agency that treats Californians with complete contempt... Enough is enough with the DMV," said Hilton. Hilton also promised to keep the state annual vehicle registration fee at $73 per vehicle.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta (Rob Bonta) weighs in after the DOJ announced charges against 28 noncitizens accused of illegally registering to vote in U.S. elections. "28 out of 23 million registered voters in California is just a drop in the bucket numerically. It's .0001% of all of the registered voters and it makes the point there is no widespread voter fraud and that there is, at times, isolated one-off examples of voter fraud," said Bonta. See Bonta's full remarks on the matter below:

California's "DELETE Act" authored by Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) officially takes effect today, Aug. 1, nearly three years after California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed it into law. Data brokers collect, buy, sell, and share your personal information—often without you ever interacting with them directly. Starting today, registered data brokers must begin processing your deletion requests submitted through California's DROP system. With one request at Californians can ask hundreds of data brokers to delete their personal information. More than 340,000 Californians have already signed up, per Becker. Here's our story as it aired on FOX40 News.

ELECTION 2026: Former Vice President Kamala Harris is in Sacramento today. She made an appearance at a phone banking event for 6th Congressional District candidate Dr. Richard Pan 🇺🇸 (D-Sacramento). During her remarks, Harris criticized Pan’s opponent, Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-Rocklin). Harris said she does not believe Kiley, who changed his registration from Republican to independent earlier this year, is a true independent. I will have reaction from Kiley. Harris added she believes the race between Pan and Kiley is very close. She also criticized President Donald Trump. Below is a portion of Harris’ remarks. More to come.

“I am not asking — I am begging.” Big city California mayors were in Sacramento today urging Gov. Gavin Newsom and lawmakers to approve $1 billion for homelessness programs (HHAP)—warning shelters could close without it. Newsom’s budget proposes $500 million. He suggested he’s holding there for now, citing frustration with cities like LA not complying with SB 79, the state law requiring more high-density housing near transit. "You don't build, we're not going to fund," Newsom said. Watch below:

The remains of a fallen U.S. service member were brought home to Northern California this evening. While I was boarding a Southwest Airlines flight at Sacramento International Airport (SMF), I happened to see the flag-draped casket surrounded by loved ones and fellow service members rendering a final salute. I am not sure who you are, but I know I speak on behalf of the American people when I say: thank you for your service. God bless you and your family.

In a rare moment, California Gov. Gavin Newsom Governor Gavin Newsom got emotional — tearing up — while announcing a major expansion of the California Service Corps. During his remarks in Sacramento alongside California Service Corps members, Newsom unveiled a push to recruit and add 10,000 paid positions focused on disaster response, education, climate action, and community projects. At one point, he paused, visibly in tears: “Weird… forgive me… This [program] is it. You want to fix all this stuff? This [program] is it," he said. Newsom called the program a path forward for a divided society: “We’re all just sitting there yelling and screaming at each other… trying to tear each other down. How are we going to get out of this? This is it… it’s so obvious what we need to do.” The effort also includes a new “Men’s Service Challenge.” CA Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday: "Here's the message from the State of California...we need you. To every young person out there, you matter...we need you to serve today." People can apply at

I spoke with Jay Leno about his renewed push for “Leno’s Law” — a proposal to change California’s smog-check rules for certain collector cars more than 35 years old. When the measure was first introduced last year, Leno came to Sacramento to urge support for it, but it later stalled in committee. Fast forward to now: With key changes, Leno is once again pushing for the proposal, hoping lawmakers drive it across the finish line. The bill, which is authored by Sen. Shannon Grove Senator Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) and Sen. Dave Cortese (D-San Jose), has thus far received bipartisan support. American Lung Association is opposed, citing air pollution concerns. California High-Speed Rail Authority CEO Ian Choudri just walked away from reporters (me, Ashley Zavala, Julie Watts and Jeannie Nguyen ABC10) and did not answer any questions following the special High-Speed Rail board board meeting addressing nearly $600,000 the CA High-Speed Rail Authority approved in taxpayer-funded contractor expenses deemed unallowable by the state inspector general. The expenses included first-class airfare, a cigar lounge, an escape room, and a nightclub, among other things. *In fairness to Mr. Choudri, I should not he made remarks during the meeting, itself. I plan to provide that in a post when possible. Raw footage:

ELECTION 2026: Republican candidate for California governor Steve Hilton (R-CA) is hosting an event in West Sacramento dubbed “The Case Against Xavier Becerra.” Hilton is speaking in front of a sign featuring Becerra’s face sipping a cup. It reads: “Smug, arrogant, taking you for granted.” Part of Hilton’s remarks: Becerra is “unfit and unqualified and too lazy even to campaign for it… he’s just hanging around to be handed the job,” Hilton said. I have reached out to Becerra’s campaign for response.

NEW: California Attorney General Rob Bonta Rob Bonta says he just held "a very comprehensive briefing" with his team at the CA DOJ to be "ready for any scenario" should the Trump administration take actions related to California's election. He added CA does *not* "have any specific threat on our radar at this moment, but we have the general possibility of threats very squarely on our radar. We'll be ready for anything." "We are preparing for all different types of scenarios including military or ICE at or near polling stations, interference through the mail, seizure of ballots," he said, "We've tabletopped and gamed out all of these scenarios. We have a plan of action for any type of potential interference. We'll be ready," he continued. Bonta's message to Trump: "If you want safe elections, if you want secure elections, if you want election integrity and fair elections, the best thing you can do is nothing."
