NEW: California Attorney General Rob Bonta Rob Bonta and Santa Clara County have filed California's 71st lawsuit against the Trump Administration, seeking to block construction of a proposed ICE facility near Gilroy. The lawsuit alleges the project violates multiple federal laws and California's Williamson Act, arguing the site is protected agricultural land and was approved without required environmental review. "The Trump Administration is ignoring the law and the wishes of the people of this state unfortunately yet again," said Bonta. "We've see this movie before, which is why we're taking them to court yet again," he continued. I have reached out to the Trump Administration for the president's reaction and side to this.

NEW: California Attorney General Rob Bonta Rob Bonta says he just held "a very comprehensive briefing" with his team at the CA DOJ to be "ready for any scenario" should the Trump administration take actions related to California's election. He added CA does *not* "have any specific threat on our radar at this moment, but we have the general possibility of threats very squarely on our radar. We'll be ready for anything." "We are preparing for all different types of scenarios including military or ICE at or near polling stations, interference through the mail, seizure of ballots," he said, "We've tabletopped and gamed out all of these scenarios. We have a plan of action for any type of potential interference. We'll be ready," he continued. Bonta's message to Trump: "If you want safe elections, if you want secure elections, if you want election integrity and fair elections, the best thing you can do is nothing."

“I am not asking — I am begging.” Big city California mayors were in Sacramento today urging Gov. Gavin Newsom and lawmakers to approve $1 billion for homelessness programs (HHAP)—warning shelters could close without it. Newsom’s budget proposes $500 million. He suggested he’s holding there for now, citing frustration with cities like LA not complying with SB 79, the state law requiring more high-density housing near transit. "You don't build, we're not going to fund," Newsom said. Watch below:

In a rare moment, California Gov. Gavin Newsom Governor Gavin Newsom got emotional — tearing up — while announcing a major expansion of the California Service Corps. During his remarks in Sacramento alongside California Service Corps members, Newsom unveiled a push to recruit and add 10,000 paid positions focused on disaster response, education, climate action, and community projects. At one point, he paused, visibly in tears: “Weird… forgive me… This [program] is it. You want to fix all this stuff? This [program] is it," he said. Newsom called the program a path forward for a divided society: “We’re all just sitting there yelling and screaming at each other… trying to tear each other down. How are we going to get out of this? This is it… it’s so obvious what we need to do.” The effort also includes a new “Men’s Service Challenge.” CA Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday: "Here's the message from the State of California...we need you. To every young person out there, you matter...we need you to serve today." People can apply at

FULL POST-EVENT REMARKS: Xavier Becerra spoke to reporters after his rally. Asked about the federal corruption case involving Dana Williamson and whether Becerra is concerned he may be implicated if she strikes a plea deal, Becerra responded: “I was not involved in those actions, and we continue to move forward.” He was also asked about a The New York Times investigation looking into allegations the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) lost track of potentially tens of thousands of migrant children under Becerra’s leadership during the Biden Administration. Becerra described the allegations as “Trump lies,” and blasted his gubernatorial opponents for repeating the claims. “This campaign is better than that,” he continued. Full unedited remarks below:

At a press conference in Sacramento within the last hour, Democratic candidate for California governor Tom Steyer warned about efforts to roll back California’s Cap-and-Invest program — which he calls a key climate tool to reduce emissions over time. Oil companies, meanwhile, argue the proposed regulations would raise costs and could force some operations out of state. Steyer also called on Xavier Becerra to return campaign contributions from Chevron, saying: “We’ve got to get big oil out of politics.”

NEW: Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo Alexandra Macedo (R-Tulare) announces she and California Assembly Republicans are calling for a special legislative session to address fraud immediately. "We need harsher penalties for the fraudsters," she said. A special session, per Macedo, would focus on bringing "accountability back to our spending and assure taxpayers when their dollars come to the state capitol, we are spending them and using them wisely and making sure they are getting to the programs and the people they are meant to protect."

Democratic consultant Steven Maviglio (D) and GOP strategist/former CA GOP Chair Ron Nehring (R) are teaming up on an effort to repeal California’s “top-two” jungle primary system. They argue it can result in general elections where voters are left choosing between two candidates from the same party. Maviglio: “You have to choose between two members of a party you don't believe in. I think that's fundamentally unfair.” Nehring: “When many voters go to vote and they realize ‘I only have two Republicans’ or ‘I only have two Democrats,’ people wonder ‘what type of crazy system is this? Where is my ability to vote for a different candidate of the party I want?’”

HIGH-SPEED RAIL UPDATE: Track for the first part of California’s High-Speed Rail project in the Central Valley is expected start being laid down next year, according to High-Speed Rail Authority Board Member Henry Perea. The news comes after the project’s board of directors moved forward with the bidding process to start laying down track in the Central Valley. But significant logistical and financial challenges remain for the full statewide route. The project is billions of dollars costlier than originally projected, and there is no estimated completion date for the full statewide route. Gov. Gavin Newsom wants the project to move forward. President Donald Trump and several legislative Republicans, including Senator Tony Strickland (R-Huntington Beach), believe the project is a waste of money. Where do you stand? Do you want the project to move forward or do you believe #highspeedrail should be derailed? Let me know.

Just wrapped a 1-on-1 with California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter (D-Irvine) at the California Democratic Party State Convention in San Francisco. I asked whether she’s concerned a crowded Democratic field could split the vote — leading to two Republicans advancing to the General Election. “At this point, two Republicans is a real risk. It’s not a certainty,” she said, adding, “we should not take that risk.” Her message to lower-polling Democrats: “If your campaign is not viable, you are not going to be able to go toe-to-toe… I think it’s time [for those candidates] to make the right choice for California.” Her full answer and my follow-up here:

California Attorney General Rob Bonta Rob Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom Governor Gavin Newsom issued guidance to local law enforcement today, reminding them they have the authority to investigate and prosecute federal agents for state law violations. “Local and state law enforcement agencies have the authority to investigate and prosecute — if appropriate — crime that occurs in California even if that crime is committed by a federal official," Bonta said. Bonta’s message to President Donald Trump: “If the President of the United States of America breaks the law… and hurts Californians, I’m going to sue him… follow the damn law.”

I just spoke with JJ Smith, the man who recorded the video in San Francisco showing what appears to be people experiencing homelessness being paid $5 to sign someone else’s name on a ballot petition. “I was shocked each time I saw this. I have been seeing things like this multiple times,” Smith said. He saw firsthand some people use the money to buy drugs nearby. "They are giving these people five dollars to go support their drug habits...it's going to be a never-ending cycle because people are going to do whatever they can do to get the money to support their drug habits."

“We should not be competing to prove who hates Donald Trump the most. We should be fighting to make life better for middle class and working families.” — California gubernatorial candidate Mayor Matt Mahan, responding after several Democrats criticized President Donald Trump in their convention speeches. Mahan was not eligible for the California Democratic Party endorsement (he entered the race too late, per party rules), so he didn’t speak from the podium like the other candidates did — but he was active on the convention floor. “Before we ask people for more, we need to demand our government do better,” he said as he called out state leaders for dramatically increasing spending over the last six years.

During a 1-on-1 at the California Democratic Party Convention in SF, I asked California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Eric Swalwell (D-East Bay) how he would tackle a potential multi-billion dollar deficit facing CA. It comes after Tom Steyer told Nikki Laurenzo on Inside California Politics that no other candidate “has a revenue plan” — mentioning Swalwell by name. Swalwell laid out a 3-part approach: • Near-term: Work with Congress to push back on Trump Administration cuts. • Mid-term: Lower taxes for CA businesses that raise wages/benefits — but impose a surcharge on companies that “practice corporate welfare” while workers rely on Medicare or state assistance. His warning: “We’re going to increase your taxes.” • Long-term: Attract more global investment to California.
