Twenty-five years later, some moments are impossible to forget. On the eve of the 25th anniversary of September 11th, former President George W. Bush visited FDNY Ladder Company 3 on Thursday—the firehouse whose apparatus was so badly damaged in the collapse of the World Trade Center that it never returned to service. Today, that rig is preserved at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. President Bush spoke with members about the days and years that followed the attacks. The bullhorn speech at Ground Zero. That unforgettable first pitch at Yankee Stadium. And the people who stood together when our city—and our country—needed them most. A quarter-century has passed, but the memories remain. #NeverForget

As the sun sets over Lower Manhattan, the pipes and drums play. FDNY members, family and friends gathered outside Engine 10/Ladder 10 for the annual Sundown Ceremony, honoring the 343 members and all those we lost on September 11, 2001. 25 years later, we remember. We will #NeverForget.

Twenty-five years ago, we suffered unimaginable losses as a nation, a City, and a Department. The world changed. The FDNY lost 343 of our own that day, and in the decades since, we have continued to lose even more to World Trade Center-related illnesses. Their names, their stories, and their courage are woven into the fabric of the Department and serve as the foundation of the modern FDNY. We renew the promise we made a quarter of a century ago—one we will keep for generations to come: We will Never Forget.

On September 11, 2001, FDNY members from Ladder Company 6 were helping Josephine Harris down Stairwell B in the North Tower when the building collapsed around them. Trapped beneath the rubble for hours, Josephine, six firefighters and a Port Authority police officer survived. What began as a rescue that day became a lifelong bond. Josephine remained close with the members of Ladder 6 until she died in 2011. The same firefighters carried her one last time as pallbearers at her funeral. On Tuesday, Josephine's family returned the green firehouse jacket she was given from Ladder 6 members following 9/11. Four of the six members who helped rescue Josephine 25 years ago were there to accept the jacket. Now, it will remain as a permanent reminder of a life saved, a bond shared, and the promise to Never Forget.

Two vehicles were parked on fire hydrants when FDNY units responded to a 4-alarm fire Thursday in the Bronx. Parking on fire hydrants is ILLEGAL in New York City, and it can delay first responders when seconds matter most. Keep hydrants clear so our members can quickly get water on a fire and save lives. 🚫 DON'T park on fire hydrants.

Twenty-five years later, Deputy Chief Renae Mascol returned to the World Trade Center site for the first time since September 11, 2001. That morning, Chief Mascol and her EMS partner crossed the Brooklyn Bridge and responded to Ground Zero. This summer, for the first time, she returned to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and stood before the names of those who were killed on September 11th and in the years since. For Chief Mascol, the memories are still vivid. "We can't let people forget," she said. "So many people gave their lives on that day. So many people are still dying." We will Never Forget.

A simple ritual, done daily: writing the names of those working. Written with chalk or marker on firehouse walls or dry erase boards, the Riding List in an FDNY firehouse is an active roster that details the firefighters working a given tour and where they're assigned on the rig. Then the terrorist attacks happened on September 11, 2001, and the Riding List became so much more than just a list. For 25 years, the FDNY has preserved the original Riding Lists from the morning of 9/11 inside firehouses across New York City. Chief of Department John Esposito reflects on what it means to see those names still there and why these ordinary tour rosters have become one of the most powerful, tangible reminders of a Department that lost so much but is still standing. A quarter of a century later, the names remain. We will Never Forget.

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, the FDNY remembers Father Mychal Judge not by how he died, but by how he lived. Known to so many as a chaplain, a Friar, a mentor and a source of comfort, Father Judge dedicated his life to serving others. His kindness, compassion and words of hope continue to resonate with FDNY members, their families and New Yorkers today. Presented by FDNY Pro Films, "Remembering Judge" tells the story of a life defined by service and leadership. It sheds light on the person who brought hope to members of the Department and their families during their darkest hours. Join us for a special screening of "Remembering Judge" at 1:30PM Sunday, Sept. 6, or 6PM Friday, Sept. 11, at Firehouse Cinema in Manhattan. Tickets can be purchased at

The FDNY added 36 names to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall on Wednesday at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn, honoring the members who died over the past year from illnesses related to their work in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center. As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11th, we remember that the impact of that day didn't end when fires were extinguished or when the recovery efforts concluded. In the years since, hundreds of FDNY members have died from illnesses connected to their heroic work, and countless others continue to battle WTC-related diseases. Each name added to our World Trade Center Memorial Wall represents a life of service, sacrifice and an enduring legacy within the FDNY. Twenty-five years later, our promise remains unchanged. We will Never Forget.

At approximately 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, FDNY members assigned to the Robotics Unit and EMS rescued two swimmers in distress off Rockaway Beach at Beach 85th Street just 20 minutes after lifeguards had gone off duty. While patrolling the shoreline with a drone, Firefighter Michael Stothers spotted the swimmers struggling in the water and, within minutes, successfully deployed a Restube flotation device from the drone. The flotation device began to inflate as soon as it hit the water and helped both swimmers remain afloat until rescuers arrived. EMT Michael Ormiston, of Station 47, entered the water with a rescue torpedo and made contact with one victim, while Firefighter Patrick O'Leary assisted in bringing the individual safely to shore. An off-duty lifeguard assisted with the rescue of the second swimmer. Both patients were transported to an area hospital in stable condition. ⚠️ As more New Yorkers head to the beach this summer, the FDNY reminds residents to swim only when lifeguards are on duty, follow the posted safety signs and to stay alert to changing water conditions.
