In 1628, Sweden built a monster. The warship Vasa was packed with 64 bronze cannons and built to strike fear across Europe. Instead, it sank 20 minutes into its maiden voyage. A light breeze tipped the ship, water flooded the open gun ports, and it went down in front of a horrified crowd - barely 1,300 meters from shore. For 333 years, it sat in the pitch-black Baltic Sea. Because the water lacked wood-boring worms, time completely stopped. When raised in 1961, 98% of its original wood was intact. Today, it stands as the best-preserved 17th-century ship on Earth. ⚓️

I always see tourists staring at Florence’s Duomo, completely ignoring the absolute mind-bender of a design trick right next to it. And today, I want to share it with you. Look closely at the windows on Giotto's Bell Tower - notice how they get wider and taller as they go up? Architect Francesco Talenti did this on purpose. He rigged the design so that when you look up from the ground, the natural optical illusion is canceled out, and every floor looks perfectly symmetrical. They were literally hacking our brains in the 1300s. 🤯 📽️Matthew Bates
