Denzel Washington improvised the legendary “King Kong ain’t got shit on me!” line in Training Day. Terry Crews, who appears in the scene, has said he was so captivated watching Denzel that he was barely thinking about acting himself. He was simply watching a master at work. You can feel it in the finished film. One actor delivered an all-time performance, and everyone else in the scene was along for the ride.

One of the smartest pieces of visual storytelling in The Godfather happens during Vito Corleone’s funeral. Every mourner tosses a rose and moves on. Clemenza pauses and looks up at his Don’s monument, paying quiet respect to a lifelong friend. Johnny Fontane gently places his rose on the coffin and leans against it, just as he had leaned on Vito throughout his life. Then there’s Tessio: he doesn’t leave a flower and fakes making the sign of the cross by adjusting his collar instead, a subtle hint that his loyalty to the Corleone’s was already gone. The funeral was not just a goodbye to Vito. It subtly reveals who truly loved him and who was already looking beyond him.

Donnie Brasco ends with Lefty being “sent for,” implying he’s about to be killed. In reality, he died of natural causes in later years. The FBI arrested Benjamin “Lefty” Ruggiero before the Mafia could get to him. Sonny Black wasn’t as lucky. He was summoned to a meeting and murdered for unknowingly bringing an undercover FBI agent into the Bonanno family. Lefty spent his final years in prison before being released with terminal cancer. He died in 1994.

Frank Pentangeli has one of the saddest arcs in The Godfather trilogy. Even after his drunken outburst against Michael, he never stopped respecting him. Frank knew Michael was the Don for a reason, even admitting, “I don’t have your brain for big deals.” He understood Michael’s authority and was loyal to him for years. The tragedy is that he only turned against Michael because he genuinely believed Michael had betrayed him. It was all built on a misunderstanding. Once the truth became clear, Frank chose to take his own life in the Roman tradition, sacrificing himself to protect the Corleone family. He didn’t die as Michael’s enemy, he died trying to make things right.

One of the most underrated deleted scenes in The Godfather Part II is when Al Neri shows Michael photographs of Fabrizio, whom they finally tracked down. Michael barely reacts. He studies the pictures for a moment and confirms the identity. What makes the scene hit so hard is that Apollonia had been gone for years by then. Michael had built an empire, started a new family, and become one of the most powerful men in America. Yet the second Fabrizio’s face appears, you realise he never truly left Michael’s mind. There’s something deeply tragic about it. Michael rarely talks about Apollonia after Sicily. He never shares his grief. But that brief look at the photographs tells you everything. Some wounds don’t heal; they just get buried under years of responsibility, power and revenge. Fabrizio probably spent years convincing himself he’d gotten away with it. The photographs tell a different story. Michael Corleone never forgot. His men didn’t need him to say anything.

One of the coolest stories about Heat is that Val Kilmer took a pay cut to play Chris Shiherlis. All Kilmer wanted was to be placed between Pacino and De Niro on the poster. Mann agreed on the spot. In hindsight, it’s hard to argue with the decision. Nearly 30 years later, Chris remains one of the most iconic characters in the film, and Kilmer delivered a performance on par with two of the greatest actors of all time.

This is one of the most revealing scenes in The Godfather Part II. Michael actually smiles. As he sits with Fredo, the tension disappears for a moment and Fredo quietly asks, “Why didn’t we do things like this before?” It’s a heartbreaking line because Fredo is already showing guilt for betraying his brother. Whether Michael is genuinely reconnecting with Fredo or quietly testing him is left ambiguous. Either way, it’s one of the last peaceful moments they ever share.

One of The Godfather‘s most revealing deleted scenes is Vito Corleone’s visit to his dying friend, Genco Abbandando. Genco begs Vito to use his influence to keep death away, showing how completely the Don’s reputation had eclipsed the man himself. In that moment, Vito is forced to confront the one authority that can never be negotiated with. This scene also does well to highlight how Michael initially wanted no part of it all.
