One of the coolest stories about Heat is that Val Kilmer took a pay cut to play Chris Shiherlis. All Kilmer wanted was to be placed between Pacino and De Niro on the poster. Mann agreed on the spot. In hindsight, it’s hard to argue with the decision. Nearly 30 years later, Chris remains one of the most iconic characters in the film, and Kilmer delivered a performance on par with two of the greatest actors of all time.

Tony not blowing up the car after seeing the woman and kids inside is the moment you realise there was still something human left in him. By that point, Tony had become consumed by power and violence. He’d crossed so many lines that you almost expect him to go through with it. But seeing the children in the backseat, he can’t do it. What makes the scene hit so hard is that Tony isn’t backing out from fear. He just can’t murder innocent kids for business. In his world, killing rivals was one thing; killing a family in broad daylight was another. That choice costs him everything. Refusing Sosa’s order puts the target on his back. Tony was a violent, deeply flawed man, but this moment shows he still had a line he wouldn’t cross. Ironically, the last real piece of humanity he had left is what got him killed.

Michael’s real punishment for Carlo was making him believe he was going to survive. He gave him a plane ticket, poured him a drink, and calmly reassured him that because of Connie and the kids, he was still family and that being pushed out of the business was the only consequence. Carlo was sure he was off the hook and even tried to thank Michael. He walked out with his head down, portraying himself as a victim of Barzini’s schemes rather than an accomplice. You could tell by the look on his face: when he got in the car and saw Clemenza behind him acting nice, there was a flash of doubt and he tried to react, but Clemenza had already wrapped the wire around his neck. Michael wanted Carlo to die unsure and unaware, the way Sonny did.

Originally, it was supposed to be Clemenza who agreed to testify against the Corleones. According to Francis Ford Coppola, Richard S. Castellano (the highest-paid actor in The Godfather (1972)) wanted to write his own lines and demanded a large salary increase. Consequently, his character was replaced by Frankie Pentangeli (Michael V. Gazzo), who received an Oscar nomination for the performance. However, according to Ardell Sheridan, Castellano refused to regain the fifty pounds required for the role due to health reasons, so Coppola decided to replace him rather than have a thinner Clemenza.

Sonny biting his knuckles is some of the best acting in the entire movie.

Neil’s death in Heat was poetic. The whole time he preached about how he was willing to walk away from everything if there was too much heat. But he ultimately died because he could not let Waingro get away with betraying the group. He didn’t end up dying because of his attachment to people he loved, but because of his attachment to people he hated.
