One of the smartest pieces of visual storytelling in The Godfather happens during Vito Corleone’s funeral. Every mourner tosses a rose and moves on. Clemenza pauses and looks up at his Don’s monument, paying quiet respect to a lifelong friend. Johnny Fontane gently places his rose on the coffin and leans against it, just as he had leaned on Vito throughout his life. Then there’s Tessio: he doesn’t leave a flower and fakes making the sign of the cross by adjusting his collar instead, a subtle hint that his loyalty to the Corleone’s was already gone. The funeral was not just a goodbye to Vito. It subtly reveals who truly loved him and who was already looking beyond him.

Frank knew Michael was the Don for a reason, even admitting, “I don’t have your brain for big deals.” He understood Michael’s authority and was loyal to him for years. The tragedy is that he only turned against Michael because he genuinely believed Michael had betrayed him. It was all built on a misunderstanding. Once the truth became clear, Frank chose to take his own life in the Roman tradition, sacrificing himself to protect the Corleone family. He didn’t die as Michael’s enemy, he died trying to make things right.
