Pure class. Kevin Keegan’s men needed only a draw against Romania to reach the quarter-finals. What could possibly go wrong? 😉

Who remembers the Umbro Cup? Back in 1995, a year before they hosted Euro 96, England held a four-team tournament featuring themselves, Brazil, Sweden and Japan. On 8th June, Elland Road was the venue as England played Sweden. This was a period when, whatever happened and whoever was in the respective teams, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 just couldn’t beat 🇸🇪. This game was no different. With the match approaching the 90th minute, Sweden were 3–1 up. However, David Platt pulled one back before the pièce de résistance from Darren Anderton. There’s something satisfying about a goal going in off the post; this one went in off two. Great finish.

Ruud Gullit was the name on everyone’s lips and was widely tipped as the man to watch. However, on 15/06/1988, it was his AC Milan team-mate Marco van Basten who stole the headlines with a devastating hat-trick. His performance was immaculate. England were heading for an early exit, while the Dutch kept alive their dreams of European glory.
