David Baddiel makes a joke about Colombia as a guest on BBC’s World Cup ‘94 coverage, which Bob Wilson seems keen to shut down. In light of what happened to Andres Escobar shortly afterwards, that exchange has aged rather awkwardly. It seems Bob was right to exercise some caution.

Having started Euro 88 with a loss to Ireland in their opening match, England had no margin for error against the Dutch, who had also lost their opening game to the USSR. Ruud Gullit was the name on everyone’s lips and was widely tipped as the man to watch. However, on 15/06/1988, it was his AC Milan team-mate Marco van Basten who stole the headlines with a devastating hat-trick. His performance was immaculate. England were heading for an early exit, while the Dutch kept alive their dreams of European glory.

On this day in 1986: No ticket for the Fa Cup final? No problem.

One of the biggest nights of my childhood was 4th July 1990. Not quite 13, but full of optimism, I thought every international football tournament would be like this for England. The day had arrived: the World Cup semi-final against West Germany. It was the talk of my school, among teachers and pupils alike. Everyone knows what happened next but, for a brief spell, from the moment “Lineker scored”, it felt like magic. So many what ifs, but so many memories.

The greatest England performance and memory of my lifetime happened 30 years ago today. 1996, the best summer ever, was really starting to hit its stride by then. After a draw with Switzerland and a win over Scotland, the Netherlands were next. Revenge for the World Cup qualifying debacle nearly three years earlier was high on everyone’s — well, my — agenda. What happened that night at Wembley was absolutely magical. The football was thrilling, the atmosphere electric and England played with a confidence and swagger that seemed almost impossible to believe. What a performance. What a team. We couldn’t, could we? 😉

Euro 96 started 30 years ago tomorrow. One of my favourite summers ever. The opening titles on the BBC and ITV always played a huge part in giving a tournament its own character and helping to create memories that last a lifetime. Here they are back-to-back, with the BBC first…

20/06/2000: England’s Euro 2000 campaign ends abruptly. Needing only a draw to progress, Kevin Keegan’s men led Romania 2-1 at half-time. It was 2-2 in the dying minutes… Then came the fatal mistake from Phil Neville. A needless penalty given away, a 3-2 defeat, and England were heading home. In truth, this was a tournament that exposed England’s shortcomings. Defensively fragile, tactically naïve and unable to manage games when it mattered most, they looked out of their depth at this level. So, too, sadly, did Kevin Keegan. His reign would limp on for a few more months, but Euro 2000 felt like the moment it became clear that international management wasn’t for him.

I remember a huge feeling of disappointment and missed opportunity on 16/06/1990 when England drew their second game at Italia 90. Scarred by their defeat to the Dutch at Euro 88, the European champions were to be feared. However, it was England who had the chances to win it in the second half. Bull and Lineker both missed opportunities, Gazza was brilliant, and Pearce had a free-kick ruled out. England had matched the Dutch and, on another day, could easily have taken both points.

It’s the eve of Gary Lineker’s rather embarrassing night in Cagliari. England vs the Republic of Ireland on the biggest stage of them all. He had picked up where he left off four years previously and put his side in front in what was likely to be a tight group. Everything appeared to be under control for the Spurs man… Or so he thought. Don’t worry, Gary — it’ll all come out in the wash.

30th June 1998: Another heartbreaking exit from a major tournament for England. In what was called the 2nd round in my day (none of this “round of 16” nonsense!), Glenn Hoddle’s men faced old rivals Argentina. The game had absolutely everything: amazing goals, controversial decisions, a red card and then, inevitably, a penalty shoot-out. Brian Moore’s commentary is a triumph. There’s genuine elation when Owen scores, shock as Beckham is sent off, and his fateful set-up for co-commentator Kevin Keegan ahead of David Batty’s final penalty.

60 seconds on Saturday 15/06/1996 changed the course of an entire summer. England had drawn with Switzerland in their opening match. They were playing badly but led Scotland 1-0 in their second game. With a little over ten minutes remaining, Gary McAllister had the chance to level things from the penalty spot and potentially derail England’s tournament. David Seaman carved his place in Euros folklore by saving it, and what followed was pure genius: Paul Gascoigne flicking the ball over Colin Hendry’s head before volleying home a goal that sent Wembley into raptures and became the defining image of Euro 96.
