💔 Somewhere in the world, a 6-year-old girl named Mariam is going to sleep after another hard day of fighting a serious illness she never chose. Her life is spent between hospitals and treatments while other children enjoy toys and school. She is battling Autoimmune Encephalitis and needs ongoing care to stay stable. I was about to head home after my shift when I passed a kennel and noticed a large German Shepherd lying quietly on his bed 🥺 In a shelter full of noise and barking, it’s rare to see a dog so still… and that alone made me stop. His name is King. I went into his kennel to check on him. He looked at me for just a moment… then slowly put his head back down 💔 I couldn’t just walk away, so I took him outside to spend some time with him. When I checked his kennel card, I saw he had been surrendered just yesterday. King is an 8-year-old German Shepherd, weighing over 100 lbs. He’s house-trained, and good with kids, cats, and other dogs — everything you’d want in a loyal companion. Once we got outside, little by little, I watched him start to come back to life 🥹

In this video, Maria had just woken up. What you see here — these small startles— are epileptic myoclonias. They are sudden, involuntary muscle jerks caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. 🧠 Maria has already been diagnosed via EEG with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome. These episodes usually happen during sleep–wake transitions or when she is very tired. 😴 It’s hard to watch… but it keeps us going: 🩷 to seek better treatment 💚 to get the right support 🩵 and to give Maria a calmer, better life Lennox-Gastaut is complex… but our love is stronger ❤️

Watching some of the newly freed medical research beagles struggle to understand that they’re safe now is heartbreaking 💔 Even with all they’ve been through, each one is incredibly gentle and so badly wants to trust. We have no doubt that with all the TLC they’re receiving, they’ll become a little braver each day ❤️
