The cab driver who assaulted a 75-year-old man in Thane — seen in a video that went viral and prompted Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to seek stringent action — was tracked down through a sting operation by Shiv Sena workers who posed as customers seeking a ride. The victim, Sarosh Dastoor, has fractured his right leg and is recovering at Jupiter Hospital. Workers used the vehicle’s registration number to get the car owner’s contact details, then called him pretending to book a cab to Lalbaug in Parel. The owner passed on driver Nishant Shukla’s number. When Shukla was contacted, he agreed to the trip and rode to the designated spot on his motorcycle. Party workers identified and detained him there before handing him over to police. “Using the registration number of the vehicle, we obtained the address and contact details of the car owner. One of our workers called the owner pretending to be a customer seeking a ride to Lalbaug in Parel. The owner then shared Shukla’s mobile number. When contacted, Shukla agreed to take the trip and as he was roaming on his bike in the vicinity, he arrived at the designated location on his motorcycle, assuring that he would be bringing his car. As soon as he reached there, party workers identified and detained him before handing him over to the police,” said local Shiv Sena leader Nitesh Patole, who was among those involved in tracing the accused. Workers from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction were also part of the search. The Vartak Nagar police have charged Shukla under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He has been remanded to two days of police custody. The case was registered on the complaint of a member of the search team, as Dastoor has not personally filed a complaint. Police said his statement has not been recorded yet as he is still recovering physically and emotionally, and will be taken once he is in a better condition. The assault took place near Jupiter Hospital in Thane West around 8 pm on Tuesday, when Dastoor and his wife were on an evening walk outside their residential building. Shukla was allegedly gargling and spitting repeatedly on the road when Dastoor objected. An argument turned violent and Shukla allegedly began abusing and assaulting the senior citizen. Eyewitness Ganesh Jadhav, who runs a coconut stall near the spot, said the altercation escalated quickly. “The cab driver was standing near his vehicle and was allegedly gargling water and repeatedly spitting on the road. Dastoor objected to his behaviour and requested him not to spit in public places. An argument ensued, which quickly turned violent after Shukla allegedly began abusing and assaulting the senior citizen,” Jadhav said. Amit Samanta, a manager at a nearby shop, said he rushed out after hearing the commotion. “It was closing time and I heard an altercation outside the shop. The customer in the shop rushed out. I also came and saw a man assaulting the senior citizen, who then fell on the footpath. The same customer intervened, stopped the fight and took the injured man to Jupiter Hospital in his car as he had sustained injuries to his right leg,” Samanta said. Dastoor and his wife live alone in a housing society near the hospital. A security guard at the building said he had worked there for three years and saw the elderly couple on their evening walks almost every day. Shinde called the Thane Police Commissioner seeking stringent action, including the addition of an attempt to murder charge given the gravity of the offence. MP Shrikant Shinde spoke to Dastoor over a video call at the hospital, inquired about his health and assured him of support. Despite approaches from multiple political parties, Dastoor has declined political support. Patole said Shukla later claimed he turned violent after Dastoor allegedly abused him in English.

The incident took place outside a popular mall when the old man reportedly objected to the taxi driver spitting on the road. An argument followed, and the enraged taxi driver was seen beating the old man while his wife tried to save him. Taxi driver was seen hitting the man with a stone, who fell down on the road and sustained injuries. As Soon as the video circulated on social media, Shiv Sena workers traced the driver, thrashed him and handed him over to the police. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde himself took cognizance of the assault on the elderly man. He released a video directing the Thane Commissioner to book the cab driver for attempt to murder. "If a person is brutally assaulted merely for pointing out that someone is littering, it will not be accepted at any cost," Shinde said. Thane is the stronghold of Eknath Shinde. A woman employed at a private company in Punjab's Mohali was allegedly stabbed to death by her former boyfriend and colleague, who later attempted to take his own life, police said. Investigators believe his efforts were unsuccessful, leaving him emotionally distressed in the weeks leading up to the incident. The attack reportedly unfolded late Thursday evening at the company office premises in Mohali. Authorities said an argument broke out between the two colleagues, following which Harjinder allegedly attacked Dimple with a knife, stabbing hime multiple times as some colleagues tried to intervene and stop the attack but to no avail. Following the attack on Dimple, Harjinder also stabbed himself and tried to end his life. However, he survived. Employees present at the office were left shocked by the sudden violence and immediately alerted the police. Upon receiving information about the incident around 7:40 pm, a police team rushed to the scene and found both individuals critically injured. Dimple and Harjinder were taken to Fortis Hospital for treatment. Doctors later declared Dimple dead, while Harjinder remains hospitalised in critical condition. Police have registered a murder case and launched a detailed investigation. Aman Baidwan, Station House Officer of Phase-11 police station, confirmed the woman's death and said her family had been informed. Further legal proceedings will continue after the arrival of her parents and the recording of their statements, they said. Investigators have sealed the crime scene and collected forensic evidence. CCTV footage from the office premises has also been seized and is being examined to reconstruct the sequence of events. Police officials said they are verifying all aspects of the case, including the nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim and the events that immediately preceded the stabbing. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to rely on forensic findings, witness statements and surveillance footage to establish the motive and determine the full circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly killing his three daughters with a sharp weapon in Giridih district, police said. The accused was identified as Nandu Yadav, a resident of Turukdiha village. Police said the victims were Yadav's eldest daughter Pallavi, 16, and 7-year-old twin sisters Riddhi and Siddhi. "He was arrested shortly after the incident," said Jeetvahan Oraon, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), who visited the spot where the bodies were found lying in a pool of blood. Police said his wife, Radha Devi, and their youngest child, 4-year-old son Pantu, were at home, when Yadav killed his daughters around 6 am. Devi told police her husband returned home drunk on Sunday night. She said she helped him bathe, served him dinner and he went to sleep. On Monday morning, she noticed he was unusually quiet. "I asked him why he drank so much, but he did not respond," she said. Devi said she became busy with household chores when Yadav took the three girls into a room, locked it from inside and told the family the children needed to study and that he would teach them. A short while later, he came out and allegedly confessed he had killed them. Police said the girls' throats were slit using a sharp-edged tool used for cutting grain. "I don't know why he killed them. My daughters were innocent and good children," Devi said. During interrogation, Nandu claimed "a ghost possessed him" and that he did not know what he had done. He also said a year ago he ate meat and was thereafter possessed, adding that it was "God's plan". Devi also alleged an extramarital relationship may be behind the killings. A forensic team collected blood samples and other evidence. Police said the suspected weapon was recovered. "We are investigating the circumstances and motive," the SDPO said.

According to her family, the victim, who was serving as a doctor at a government hospital in Kapurthala, had been living separately from her husband since July 2025 due to marital disputes. Her parents alleged that she was planning to seek a divorce and had recently begun exploring the purchase of a separate house. The matter allegedly came to light when she approached a bank regarding a housing loan and learned that liabilities worth approximately Rs 2.5 crore were already linked to her name. Family members claimed that her signatures did not appear on the relevant loan documents and that subsequent checks of her CIBIL records revealed about the huge loan. Her father, Pramod Kumar, alleged that the discovery of the loans caused immense mental distress to his daughter. He further claimed that the loans included financing linked to vehicles and business-related activities. The family has also accused Piyush of maintaining an extra-marital relationship with a nurse employed at the same hospital. According to the complainants, Meenakshi became suspicious and later examined CCTV footage from the hospital, which they claim supported her suspicions. The family said the footage has been handed over to the police as part of the investigation. Her parents further alleged that she had been subjected to physical assault and harassment. They claimed there had been previous incidents of violence and that Piyush would occasionally contact them after altercations, expressing regret over his behaviour. Parents also claimed that last year he tried to kill her by strangling. “We are being told it is a suicide, but we do not know whether it was suicide or something else. The postmortem examination will reveal the truth,” she said. The family has demanded the immediate arrest of Piyush and a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to Meenakshi’s death, including the alleged financial transactions and claims of harassment. Investigators now say the injuries visible in that viral video were not the result of childhood mischief but part of a pattern of severe and repeated physical abuse allegedly inflicted by his stepfather, Ashkar, 31. The Nedumangad police arrested Ashkar after a post-mortem examination revealed extensive internal injuries, including bleeding in the head and other parts of the body. The findings pointed to sustained violence rather than an accident. According to investigators, the one-and-a-half-year-old bore nearly 50 injury marks of varying ages and severity across his body. Some injuries were fresh, while others appeared older. Police said burn marks, suspected to have been caused by cigarette stubs, were also found. The case came to light on Friday when Ashkar took the child to a private hospital in Panavoor, claiming that he had choked while eating lunch. Arshid was later shifted to SAT Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. At the time, Akhila, 24, was reportedly in Tamil Nadu for a dance programme. Reports suggest that the child’s grandparents had earlier alerted the police about suspected repeated assaults on the boy, but no action was taken at the time. After the death of her husband, Akhila had reportedly informed authorities that she was unable to care for her son. In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old gym owner was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Haryana's Hansi on Thursday morning in a brutal attack. The victim, identified as Kapil, was outside his gym working out with a group of people when the bike-borne assailants opened fire at him. The incident took place around 6 am near Fawwara Chowk in Hansi as the shocking visuals were captured on camera after the attackers fired around 10 rounds at the victim before fleeing the scene. Further, Kapil sustained multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot before medical assistance could arrive. The deceased, Kapil, a native of Jind who had recently shifted his fitness centre to expand his business after three years in Hansi, had just entered into a love marriage before he was shot dead. Following the incident, Kapil's family was devastated. The sudden killing has triggered grief and outrage among residents, who have demanded swift action against those responsible. Soon after receiving information about the incident, local police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. Teams from the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) and forensic experts also reached the scene to collect evidence. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertain at the time of writing this report.
