“You took my brother [to the war] — and he died! Aren’t you ashamed? Let the boy go! Let him go!” Women in my native city of Lviv shout as they try to free a young man being forcibly mobilized by recruitment officers and police. There is a deeply personal motive behind scenes like this — behind women stepping in to protect other women’s husbands, sons and brothers from forced draft. For them, this is not abstract politics. It is personal loss. One has lost a husband. Another, a son. Another, a brother... They know what that loss feels like. They know the hole it leaves behind, because they still carry it with them. And they do not want another woman to be condemned to the same grief. So they step forward. They defend someone else’s husband. Someone else’s son. Someone else’s brother. These women are among the true heroines of this war. They are its human face — in a war that has stripped far too many others of theirs.

‘He’s just a kid!’ Shouts a woman who happened to witness the young man being kidnapped to the front and rushed to defend him. At first, one draft officer seized him. Then several others suddenly ran up and quickly dragged him into a van before passers-by could gather and try to pull him free. Lutsk, Ukraine.

“Mom is gone. They took Dad away. Who am I supposed to live with?!” the boy cries for his father, who was taken away by draft officers to be sent off to war. His father was the boy’s sole legal guardian — which means he was legally entitled to a deferment from military service. Yet violations like this are increasingly becoming the norm. Mobilization quotas won’t fill themselves. Welcome to Zelenskyy’s country of “Four Freedoms.”

Smart young men who stay sharp, keep their heads on a swivel, and stay physically fit have a better chance of avoiding the meat grinder. Rivne, Ukraine. Welcome to the latest urban attraction: safari season for men of military age. No tickets required — apparently, you’re the game.

In Vinnytsia, Ukraine, draft officers dragged a working-class man out of his battered old Lada and packed him into their van to be sent off to war. Funny how we never seem to get the same footage of prosecutors’ sons being dragged out of their Porsche Cayennes. This is Ukraine’s “existential war”: the poor are expected to die for the country, while the rich somehow keep finding the time — and the money — to buy yachts. Apparently, sacrifice is universal. It’s just distributed by tax bracket.

Draft officers in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, grabbed a man off the street as he walked with his wife. She refused to let him face it alone — afraid he might be beaten or pressured into signing draft papers. So when they put him in the military van, she climbed in right beside him. No grand speeches. No heroic slogans. Just a wife refusing to abandon her husband when he needed her most. 😍How far would you go for the man you love?

A dude in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, was just chilling near his home, sipping coffee and puffing on his IQOS. A minute later, plainclothes draft officers speedran his morning routine and stuffed the poor thing into a van. He got so scared he didn’t even manage to close his front door. His buddy caught a kick and got absolutely marinated in pepper spray. Guys, smoking kills. Especially in Ukraine!

“It's my son who is at work while you don’t do a damn thing! Get the hell out of here!” A woman shouts at draft officers as she physically pushes them out of a minibus (marshrutka) in Kyiv. She steps in to protect the men inside from forced mobilization — and makes it crystal clear that the officers are not welcome. That’s a Real Mama Bear☺️

“Let Him Go!” screams the mother, clinging to the leg of a police officer trying to drag her son away to the front. She begs. She sobs. She strikes the men hauling him away with her slipper, again and again. Her screams bring others running. They come to fight back against a system that devours their sons — and leaves their mothers behind to drown in black grief.

Brutal “busification” in Vinnytsia. A van bearing the Nova Poshta logo pulls up, apparently to lull men on the street into a false sense of security. Masked draft officers jump out, rush a man, and forcibly drag him into the van. A woman screams and protests. She is pepper-sprayed. Welcome to the country of Zelensky’s “Four Freedoms.”

A shootout between Ukraine’s HUR and SBU in Kyiv has reportedly left one HUR officer dead and two wounded. Apparently, the 1990s called and asked for their turf-war aesthetics back. The whole mess started because the SBU abducted Stepan Kaplunov, a neo-Nazi and member of the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) who was under HUR’s wing. Former HUR chief Budanov has already declared that “no one has the right to abduct servicemen.” The SBU, meanwhile, insists that Kaplunov was involved as an organizer of a crime connected to some particularly dangerous special operation that it managed to thwart. So what are we left with? Exactly what I’ve been writing about for years. If you turn Ukraine into a safe haven for neo-Nazis and criminals from Russia and elsewhere because your intelligence services regard them as “valuable assets,” don’t act surprised when you eventually get extremism and organized crime. That is, after all, their core competency. And remember they’re apparently doing it on the Western taxpayer’s dime. A charming little public-private partnership in political violence. Behold your beacon of democracy: intelligence agencies shooting at each other over custody of a neo-Nazi operative. Slava Ukraini?
