Happy Hindu Lunar New Year! Welcome to Kaliyuga 5127 and Vikram Samvat 2083. Did you know not everyone celebrates the New Year on January 1? Hindus, for example, follow over 30 distinct calendars, each tied to seasons, trade, and agriculture. From lunar months guiding planting to solar cycles tracking markets, these calendars were carefully designed to keep life, work, and nature in harmony. The most common lunisolar system begins with Chaitra (March–April), marking the start of spring with festivals of color, renewal, and abundance. This is especially true when it comes to the ongoing tensions in Kashmir, where misleading claims often dominate the conversation. For example, headlines claim the conflict is just a case of India and Pakistan “fighting yet again.” Scholar-activists claim India is a colonial occupier in Kashmir, erasing the indigenous identity of Kashmiri Pandits and the deep historical ties that bind Kashmir to India. Some claim that Kashmiris have no right to self-determination, ignoring the democratic processes and elections that have been held in the region. In Naperville, IL, allegations arose from a video on social media, supposedly depicting two Hindu American students burning a book claimed to be the Quran. The incident led to condemnation from Islamic groups, but it was later revealed that the book was not the Quran. This misinformation which has caused severe consequences, including bullying and death threats against the MINOR students, propagated by various organizations and global mainstream media.

If the folks at Sikh Coalition had bothered to watch the whole podcast for what it is, this clip would show our staff on HAF Reacts stating clearly, explicitly, and unequivocally that engaging in transnational repression (TNR) on U.S. soil is unacceptable. Of course, that part didn’t make it into the outrage narrative.
