BREAKING: New numbers out tomorrow will show the deficit for last financial year is billions of dollars smaller than forecast at the Budget in May. This means that not only is the bottom line much better than the government inherited, it’s better than what was forecast at the election and it’s improved again since the Budget. Responsible economic management is a defining feature of this Albanese Labor Government.

Helen, you're so important to us, you're so admired by us and you're so loved by us. Here is my statement in the House of Representatives - an important opportunity to send our support to Helen and also thank the community members, first responders and everyone who stepped up and stepped in last Monday.

Australia has a lot going for us and we have our fair share of challenges as well. That’s why our responsible economic management and stronger budget is so important. Government spending came down a bit in the budget outcomes we released this week, and the contribution of government spending to demand in the economy was the lowest in more than a decade.

I’ll be engaging with more than 30 business leaders and investors and my Japanese counterpart in Tokyo in a packed couple of days to showcase Australia as a premier investment destination. This is all about strengthening cooperation, boosting investment and building resilience in both our economies in Australia’s national interest.

It’s now beyond doubt that if any combination of Liberals, Nationals and One Nation win the next election it will be the end of universal super as we know it. The dangerous anti-worker, anti-super ideology they share with each other would decimate the economic security and retirement incomes of Australian workers.

One Nation wants to destroy the compulsory superannuation system, just like the Liberals and the Nationals. They are all a threat to the retirement incomes and economic security of Australian workers. Labor built Australia’s super system, and we’ll always defend it.

BREAKING: Every one of the 2.7M active small businesses in this country will now have access to generous CGT concessions, and 98% of all active businesses will be eligible for these concessions. These next steps are all about providing more clarity and confidence to investors, more support for small businesses, and more incentives for innovation.

The Coalition would end superannuation as we know it, decimating the retirement incomes and economic security of Australian workers. Labor built the super system and we will defend it forever from the dangerous and divisive anti-worker, anti-super ideology shared by the Liberals, Nationals and One Nation.

Analysis from Treasury of new ATO data for 2023-24 shows that 0.2% of tax filers earned around 60% of all the net capital gains income, while 99% of tax filers earned only 13%. We are making the tax system fairer for workers, first home buyers and young Australians.

A really productive set of meetings at the IMF and World Bank Annual and G20 Finance Ministers Meetings. From advocating for an end to the war in the Middle East that is having a devastating economic impact to promoting investment in areas like fuel, energy, defence and critical minerals, I appreciated the opportunity to meet with so many of my international counterparts.

The Coalition can't win the next election without joining One Nation and today one of the Liberal Party's front benchers has confirmed that's their plan. The next election will be a contest between Labor that's delivering real change with higher wages for workers and more help to get into housing or a Liberal-National-One Nation coalition with a big anti-worker agenda.
