She came to prominence way back in 1953 while appearing in the hugely popular radio show, Take it From Here, alongside Jimmy Edwards and Dick Bentley. From there her career went from strength to strength and by the time she appeared in Hancock's Half Hour as the nurse in the legendary episode, The Blood Donor, she'd been a household name for a number of years. Seriously, I cannot think of a more versatile actor than June Whitfield. Her Miss Marple, which she did for BBC Radio, is absolutely superb and I listen to it often. I had the pleasure of interviewing her about a year before she died. The subject was Kenneth Connor, who she knew and had worked with on several occasions (most notably in Carry On Abroad) and, just as you'd expect, she was charming and generous with her time. Anyway, I thought I'd post a quick blast from Ab Fab. It's a great line, beautifully delivered. God bless June Whitfield x

I've just watched an excellent documentary about the sublime Joyce Grenfell called Comedy With Breeding, and felt compelled to post one of her monologues. I know her most famous work is the "George, don't do that", nursery monologue, but she wrote hundreds, and fortunately many were filmed. Here's one of my favourites called Lady in Church. Yesterday at a charity shop, I bought a copy of the album "Sing Lofty" by Don Estelle and Windsor Davies, which affords me an opportunity to play their cover of "Whispering Grass." Estelle and Davies had already worked as a club double act before being cast together in the sitcom "It Ain't Half Hot Mum." They first met 12 years earlier, in 1962, and toured successfully for several years. They recorded "Whispering Grass" in 1975 and it spent three weeks at number one in the UK, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. They followed it with other recordings, including this album, and singles such as "Paper Doll." Good morning, lovely boy.

It was written by Ronnie Barker, under the pseudonym Gerald Wiley, and for my money it gives Four Candles a run for it’s money. Seriously, if I’d written something this good I’d just retire immediately. What a talent! Good morning.
