This is from a short lived sketch from 2005 called Monkey Trousers, featuring Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and Steve Coogan, et al. Only six episodes were ever made but only five were broadcast, although I'm not sure why. One of the recurring sketches from the series was Geordie Astronauts, featuring V&B, Tim Healey and my fellow Boro supporter, Mark Benton. And here's one of them. Good morning.

In celebration of the new heatwave, here's a Public Information Film from the 1970's that you might just recognise. It's one of four films featuring two characters enjoying the good weather: Joe, complete with a handkerchief on his head, and his bespectacled wife, Pertunia, who has a tongue like Gene Simmons from Kiss! Joe was voiced by Peter Hawkins (Bill & Ben, etc) and Wendy Craig voiced the first three films as Pertunia, followed by Bridget Forsyth. The films were made by the same people who brought us Willo the Wisp! Bit of Public Information Film trivia for you. Did you know that Charley the cat from the Charley Says series, was voiced by Kenny Everett! Toodlepip.

The great Paul Whitehouse is 68 years old today, which means I am obliged to post this (again!) - arguably the most majestically random but brilliant comedy sketch committed to celluloid for at least the last, what, forty, forty five years? Yes, forty, forty five years. Happy birthday Paul 🤘

David Tynan O’Mahony (AKA Dave Allen) was born on this day in 1936. One of Ireland’s great comic voices and a brilliantly sharp satirist, his work made a lasting impression on British and Irish entertainment, not least because he had such an easy, distinctive way of drawing people in. Sitting on his stool, glass in hand, he made it feel as though he was simply talking to you, pointing out the absurdities of life, religion, authority, and human behaviour with a calm smile and a perfectly timed punchline. On what would have been his 90th birthday, Dave Allen is worth remembering not only as a very funny man, but as someone who encouraged people to think, question, and laugh at the strange business of being human x

May the benevolent Lord forgive me, but I do believe this is the first time I have posted anything from Big Train, which remains one of my favourite sketch shows from, well, any decade really. This sketch, London to Edinburgh, is one of my favourites from the series, not least because the performances (from Simon Pegg and Amelia Bullmore), are inspired. Good morning.

This Two Ronnies sketch was never televised originally (it appeared many years later), but I’ve no idea why. It was written by Ronnie Barker, under the pseudonym Gerald Wiley, and for my money it gives Four Candles a run for it’s money. Seriously, if I’d written something this good I’d just retire immediately. What a talent! Good morning.

Are you arsing well happy you dismal, moaning French twat!” In honour of today's British Grand Prix, I am posting one of my favourite sketches from A Bit of Fry & Laurie, which not only stars the terrific two, but was written by them as well. Stephen Fry was supposed to mime or pull the punch at the end, but he accidentally connected. You can see by his reaction immediately after, as he looks surprised and slightly concerned. Cracking right hook! T'is lights out, and away they jolly well go! #F1 #formula1 #stephenfry #hughlaurie

For me The Marx Brothers are at their best, either alone or collectively, when goading or ridiculing powerful or influential people, examples of which are too numerous to list here. This is one of my favourites though. It’s from the film A Night in Casablanca and features Groucho Marx winding up a self important bigwig, played by Paul numerous to list here. This is one of my favourites though. It’s from the film A Night in Casablanca and features Groucho Marx winding up a self important bigwig, played by Paul Harvey. By the way, did you know that the Irish government banned the Marx Brothers’ masterpiece, Duck Soup, when it came out in 1933, fearing it might encourage “anarchic tendencies”. The ban wasn’t lifted until 2000!

The two highly cultured surgeons from the seminal series, Harry and Paul, Sheridan and Charles, are among my favourite comedy characters ever, I think. In this sketch, Sheridan’s flying solo, with a bit of help from QEII, as voiced by the certified uber talent, Kate Robbins By the way, how are your stools?

don't usually commemorate death dates, but in the case of the mighty James Robertson Justice, I always make an exception. Actor, naturalist, lumberjack, journalist, Royal Navy reservist, linguist, member of the League of Nations, racing driver, secretary of the British Ice Hockey Association, university rector, Music Hall Chairman and subject of my first biography, What's the Bleeding Time, he died on this day in Romsey, Hampshire in 1975 aged 68. Here he is in one of my favourite Sunday afternoon films, The Fast Lady, being taken for a ride by the much missed Stanley Baxter. God bless JRJ x

If there’s a finer way of heralding in a weekend than watching the opening credits to Galton and Simpson’s Leslie Phillips sitcom, Casanova '73, I’m yet to see it. His reaction when the petrol pump attendent “puts the nozzle in”, kills me every time! 😁 By the way, the entire series is now available to watch on YouTube, if you dare.

The song, Three Lions, and particularly the line, “football’s coming home”, has been to the England Football team what the name of “the Scottish play” is to suspicious thespians. A fecking jinx, in other words. I much prefer this, Back Home (1970), which I assume refers to the players, who did return home, as opposed to the World Cup, which, erm, didn't. And still hasn't. YET!! Good evening.

I had a discussion yesterday with somebody about Father Ted and we ended up trying to choose, at first, our top 5 moments, which became 10, and then 20. Anyway, here's what I believe was my #4, featuring Ted, Dougal and "Your man from One Foot in the Grave. The, I don't believe it, man". Enjoy the sunshine 🌞

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's attempt to remake Star Wars, which was filmed while they were making the film, Paul, is a thing of beauty, IMVHO. Their go-to on-screen relationship that we've seen in so many films over the years always leaves me wanting more, and this is certainly no exception. Good day.

The genre of Christian Ska may not be that well known, but it's a thing. Be afraid, kids.
