What would Canada have to do before you finally said: enough? This is my full conversation with a group of “Forever Canadians” at the Alberta independence rally outside the Alberta Legislature on August 29. Earlier I posted some of the most heated moments from this exchange. This is the complete conversation, and I think the most important part is actually a much deeper question: Is there a line that Canada could cross that would make you stop supporting it? One woman accused me of being a “traitor” who had turned against my homeland. So I tried to explain why. You can genuinely love something and still reach a point where you can no longer support it. I use the deliberately extreme example of discovering that your spouse was a serial killer. You might love that person, but eventually some actions cross a line that love cannot excuse. That is how I feel about Canada. One of my biggest concerns is freedom of expression. Canada’s Charter protects freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, but those freedoms are subject to limits that governments can attempt to justify under Section 1. Canada also has newly introduced criminal hate-speech laws (bill C9). That has crossed a line. So I turned the question around on myself: what could Canada do that might convince me to become a federalist again? A constitutional guarantee of inalienable free-speech protections would go a long way. If Canadians had rights that governments could not easily limit when political circumstances changed, I would seriously reconsider my position. And I also explain something independence supporters sometimes fail to emphasize: There are still things I love about Canada. One example is our safety culture and the value we place on protecting workers. Having worked and travelled to places where those standards are bad, I know that Canada has built many institutions worth preserving. Alberta independence does not require pretending everything Canada created was bad. My argument is that lines have been crossed and because of that I have given up on Canada. This video captures something people need to see. I was having a polite conversation with a reasonable man who supports staying in Canada. We disagreed, but we were talking respectfully. Meanwhile, from way across the field, another Forever Canadian apparently spotted me and made a straight line toward me, visibly angry. I never saw him coming. I was recording over my shoulder, so the camera could see what I couldn’t. He approached quickly from directly behind me, and just before he reached me, a random bystander saw what was happening and stepped between us. I’m extremely grateful that he did. The man approaching me was shouting that I wasn’t allowed in the park, that this was “his park,” that I wasn’t allowed to be there, and that I was being disrespectful. The bystander stood his ground, exchanged a few choice words with him, and eventually got him turned around. Watching the footage afterward was unsettling. From my perspective, this man appeared to be approaching me aggressively from behind, and I had absolutely no idea he was there. There is something revealing about the contrast in this video. The man I was actually interviewing supports remaining in Canada, yet we were able to have a civil and reasonable disagreement. In many ways, reasonable centrists probably agree with Alberta independence supporters about a great deal—right up until the question of actually becoming independent. Then there is another faction: people who seem to treat peaceful advocacy for Alberta independence as something that makes us enemies. That attitude has consequences. People publicly supporting Alberta independence have already faced aggressive confrontations. We have seen supporters shoved, threatened, and in one particularly disturbing incident, an older man was pushed toward traffic and could have been seriously hurt. I don’t go looking for confrontations. I would much rather talk to people. But I’m also not going to be intimidated out of peacefully expressing my political beliefs. And this is where the leadership of the Forever Canada movement needs to think very carefully about their rhetoric. When political leaders repeatedly throw around words like “traitor” and “treason” to describe Albertans participating in a peaceful, democratic and lawful political process, some unstable people are going to take those words literally. If you convince someone that his political opponent is genuinely a traitor, it becomes much easier for that person to convince himself that aggression is justified. That is an incredibly dangerous road to go down. Albertans advocating independence are operating within Canada’s legal and democratic system. We are talking, organizing, campaigning and trying to persuade our neighbors. That disagreement should be settled with arguments and ballots—not intimidation. But I wanted to publish this part first because people should see what happened behind me—and because I’m very grateful to the stranger who saw the situation developing and stepped in before I even knew what was happening.

In Sylvan Lake I spoke with an Iraqi Christian family who came to Canada in 2006 about what immigrants owe the country that welcomed them. Their answer was blunt: come here for a better life, obey Canadian law, work hard, care for your family and leave the conflicts of the old country behind. They told me newcomers should not come to Canada and then try to force the same politics, divisions or customs on everyone else. Canada gave their children safety and a future, and they believe immigrants have a duty to protect that. Then I told them I support Alberta independence. Their response surprised me: they support it too, and they have lawn signs in support of independence up! Support for Alberta independence is not limited to people whose families have lived here for generations. Immigrants who came here legally, worked hard and integrated can also see that Alberta is losing control over its culture, immigration and future. This is a powerful conversation. Listen to the end. “TRAITORS SHOULD BE HANGED.” That is what a Forever Canada counter-protester screeched at me at the Alberta Legislature today. She had been repeatedly screaming that Alberta independence supporters were “traitors,” so I walked over and asked the obvious question: What should happen to traitors? For a while she wouldn’t answer. I got insults, swearing and a middle finger instead. Then she finally said it: “Traitors should be hanged.” Think about what is happening here. We are peacefully advocating for a democratic referendum. Canadians are legally free to advocate constitutional change, and the Supreme Court has already established a constitutional process that would follow a clear referendum mandate for secession. You can oppose Alberta independence. You can campaign against us. You can vote to remain Canadian. But advocating political change through speeches, signs, rallies and ballots does not make someone a traitor. And when someone repeatedly calls peaceful political opponents “traitors” and then says traitors should be hanged, I think people should hear exactly what was said. This rhetoric matters, especially when independence supporters have already reported hostility and dangerous behavior at public events. Watch the exchange yourself. They Called Me Racist at an Alberta Independence Rally At the Alberta Legislature on August 29, I approached a small group of apparent counter-protesters holding signs about treaty rights and openly calling out to people attending the Alberta independence rally. I wanted to hear what they believed. Instead, the conversation immediately turned hostile. I was sworn at, accused of racism, and told that because my ancestors came from Europe, I am not Indigenous to this land and am living on “stolen land.” So I tested the logic behind that argument. If ancestry determines who legitimately belongs on a piece of land, how should we think about large-scale migration into Europe from Africa and the Middle East? Their answer was that Europe deserves what is happening because Europeans have oppressed people around the world. That led to an obvious question: if ancestry determines who belongs in Canada, why wouldn’t the same principle apply to Europeans in Europe? The conversation didn’t get very far after that. What concerns me most is how casually the word “racist” is now thrown at people during political disagreements. Racism is a serious accusation and a genuinely serious problem. If we use the word for every disagreement involving identity, immigration, Indigenous issues or Alberta independence, the word loses its meaning. While walking through a Walmart parking lot in Wainwright with my friend who moved here from Ontario, a man walked up, recognized me, and started talking about why he supports Alberta independence. Totally random. Totally unscripted. And honestly, that’s what made it powerful. Wainwright is a military town, so naturally the conversation turned toward soldiers, veterans, and what independence would mean for them. He said a lot of soldiers support independence, but many are worried about their jobs because there is still uncertainty about what transition would look like. That concern is real, and it deserves to be taken seriously. But here’s what we believe: Albertans have deep respect for our veterans. We are ashamed of how Canada has treated too many of them. A country that tells veterans they can access MAID instead of making sure they receive the care, honour, and support they deserve has lost something very important. An independent Alberta would have the chance to build something better. A proud military. A serious defence culture. A country that honours its veterans, protects its people, and treats service as something worthy of respect. Veterans and soldiers who support Alberta independence should not feel abandoned by this movement. They should know that many of us see them as essential to the country we are trying to build. This is one of the more uncomfortable moments from my recent Sylvan Lake video. I was walking past a group of guys openly drinking on the beach. They were visibly drunk, and I hesitated to talk to them because it did not feel like a productive situation. I tried to keep walking, but one guy followed me a bit and wanted to speak his mind. At that point, the camera became a bit of a buffer. I let him talk, stayed calm, and tried to keep the situation from turning worse. This clip is not just about one drunk guy at the beach. It shows how risky it can be to talk openly about Alberta independence in public. Some people on the other side feel bold, untouchable, and completely convinced that they are automatically right. He does touch on a few notable topics, which is why I kept it in the main video for posterity. But my advice is simple: If you do not want to be on the internet, do not walk up to someone with a camera and start talking. Watch the full video here:

I talked with a man from India in downtown Red Deer about student visas, immigration fraud, refugee claims, and whether Canada should actually enforce its own rules. I started with softball questions. He told me he came here as a student, studied chemical engineering, and is now working in healthcare because that may be a better pathway to permanent residency. Then I asked him about something many Canadians have heard about: students coming here, not finishing school, working instead, and then claiming refugee status when their student visa is running out. At first, he admitted he had heard of cases like that too. Then, when I asked about agencies allegedly helping students qualify financially, students borrowing money to show proof of funds, paying it back after arriving, working jobs, skipping school, and later claiming asylum, he suddenly became more defensive. Maybe he was being careful. Maybe he was caught off guard. But the conversation felt evasive. This is not some wild conspiracy theory. Canada’s own Auditor General reported that in 2023 and 2024, IRCC identified more than 153,000 students as potentially non-compliant with study permit conditions, but only had funding to investigate about 2,000 cases per year. IRCC launched 4,057 investigations, and about 40% of those cases were not closed because students did not respond to requests for information. The federal government has also acknowledged reports of international students and graduates facing removal because of fraud, including fraudulent admission documents, while some students claimed they did not know the documents were fake. And this problem has already hit the news. There were reports of hundreds of Indian students caught up in a fake Canadian college admission letter scandal, with a joint IRCC-CBSA task force reviewing cases. When I asked the man from India what should happen if fraud is happening, he said the government should have strict rules and enforce them. I agree. If you come to Canada honestly, follow the rules, study, work, integrate, and contribute, I respect that. But if people are cheating the student visa system, abusing refugee claims, lying on applications, or using loopholes to stay here after their status expires, Canadians have every right to ask questions. And Albertans have every right to ask why Ottawa controls the system while our communities deal with the consequences. This is another reason I support Alberta independence. I spoke with a Canadian citizen who immigrated from Chile as a little boy. He told me he has been a Class 1 truck driver for 35 years. But when he tried to get work in Vancouver, he said he could not get hired because, in his words, companies were only hiring immigrants from India. That is a serious problem. I told him I had heard something similar from a man from Somalia, who openly told me he went to a Somali-run driving school, got his licence, and was sent long-haul trucking into the United States the very next day. As someone with a Class 1 licence myself, that is shocking. Normally, after school, you ride with an experienced driver before going out on your own. Sometimes for months. That is because you are driving a massive machine that can kill people if you do not know what you are doing. This is not about race. It is about safety, fairness, and whether Canada is enforcing its own rules. It is illegal to hire based on race. It is dangerous to cut corners in commercial trucking. And it is deeply unfair when experienced drivers are pushed out while ethnic hiring networks protect their own. As long as Alberta is part of Canada we will not have control over immigration and this corruption will continue under Ottawa's perview. A veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces stopped me in Red Deer and shared a perspective that I think a lot of people need to hear in full, not reduced to a slogan. He told me his father fought in World War II. He told me his sons served in Afghanistan. This is not somebody speaking casually about loyalty, sacrifice, or duty. This is somebody from a family that has given real service across generations. And his message was blunt: in his view, Canada is no longer being loyal to people like him, and nothing meaningful is going to change in Ottawa. That is why he believes Alberta independence is now the only way forward. Whether someone agrees with that conclusion or not, people should at least understand the depth behind it. For many soldiers, veterans, and military families, loyalty is not an abstract idea. It is tied to duty, sacrifice, service, loss, and trust. The basic belief is that if you give yourself to a country, that country should still reflect the values you served to protect. When people who spent their lives serving begin to feel alienated from the direction of the country, that is not a small thing. I think the concern here is bigger than party politics. It is about the feeling that the institutions of Canada are no longer listening, no longer correcting course, and no longer representing the people who built, defended, and sustained this country. For some veterans, the frustration is not just with one bad policy or one bad government. It is the belief that the system itself is no longer responsive. That is the nuance people miss. When a veteran says Alberta independence is the only way forward, he is not necessarily saying he stopped caring about the country overnight. He may be saying the opposite. He may be saying he cared so much, for so long, that it means something when he finally concludes the relationship is broken beyond repair. A lot of soldiers and veterans may have concerns about even entertaining that idea. They may value unity, continuity, tradition, and the memory of what they served under. They may worry that supporting Alberta independence feels like turning their back on their service, their oath, or the people they served beside. That is a real emotional and moral tension. But the other side of that tension is this: what if loyalty is not supposed to be one-way? What if there comes a point where citizens, including veterans, have the right to say that the political system has become unworthy of their continued trust? What if defending freedom sometimes means being honest about when a government or a national project has drifted too far from the people it claims to represent? That is why this moment mattered. This was not just a random political opinion shouted from the roadside. It was a serious statement from someone whose family has lived service, sacrifice, and national duty. And when people like that start saying Ottawa will not change, others should pay attention. You do not have to agree with him to recognize the weight of what he is saying. I went to the Forever Canadian office in Edmonton because Albertans deserve answers about whether both sides of the October 19 referendum are being held to the same rules — I don't beleive they are! Elections Alberta lists Forever-Canadian Citizens Initiative Society as a registered referendum third-party advertiser with $0.00 in reported referendum advertising contributions through September 10. Meanwhile, Forever Canada has offices, events and tens of thousands of lawn signs across Alberta. I had an honest conversation with an Indian immigrant in Sylvan Lake about littering, integration, foreign conflicts, government benefits, trucking and Alberta independence. He did not avoid the difficult questions. He agreed that people who come to Canada should respect Canadian culture, obey the law and leave conflicts from their home countries behind. He said plainly: “We should try to become Canadian first.” We also discussed fraudulent trucking schools and unqualified drivers. He acknowledged that corruption and shortcuts exist, but added: many Indian truck drivers are hardworking people supporting their families, and they should not all be blamed for the actions of a minority. Towards the end he surprised me and said he supports Alberta independence! This is why I keep having these conversations. Support for Alberta independence is not limited to one race, religion or background. Many immigrants came here because they value hard work, personal responsibility, family and freedom. Those are Albertan values. An independent Alberta could control immigration, enforce merit-based entry, deport non-citizens who commit serious crimes and protect the culture that made people want to come here in the first place. I talked with a man from Côte d’Ivoire in downtown Red Deer about coming to Canada, refugee programs, permanent residency, work, English, and integration. He told me he came to Canada and became a permanent resident after only six months, which he described as a long process. He also told me he does not have a job. When I asked how he pays his bills and survives in Canada without working, he became evasive and said his family supports him. That may be true, but the way he answered made me suspicious. It sounded coached, like he knew he was not supposed to talk openly about what support he may be receiving. I have no problem with immigrants who come honestly, work hard, integrate, and respect the culture. But we deserve to know: How fast is this happening? Who qualifies? Who pays? What are the expectations? How long does welfare support last? Why does Ottawa get to decide while Alberta lives with the consequences? Immigration should serve the needs of the country and the people already here. But it seems like the boarders are wide open and the system is not working the way many assume it does. THIS INCIDENT SHOULD CONCERN EVERY ALBERTAN, WHETHER YOU SUPPORT THE PETITION OR NOT A canvasser was in public, lawfully collecting signatures, when a man approached as if he wanted to sign, then allegedly grabbed the petition papers and ran. She reported it to police. What matters here is not just the theft. It is what this kind of act says. When people stop trusting themselves to win through debate, some try to interfere with the process instead. That is when disagreement turns into contempt for democratic participation. THIS WAS AN ACT OF COWARDICE! If you oppose a petition, THEN OPENLY OPPOSE IT WITH YOUR WORDS. Make your case. Debate it. But do not interfere with other people’s lawful right to participate. THE ANSWER TO SPEECH YOU DISLIKE IS MORE SPEECH, NOT THEFT AND INTIMIDATION! Please share the video. But don't accuse random people online without evidence. Innocent people should not have their reputations damaged by reckless speculation. If you truly have useful information, report it directly to police.

Something is changing in Alberta… and you can feel it. Drone shots of a convoy rolling into Mirror. Trucks and cars lined up. Horns blaring. Alberta flags waving in the wind. An anthem playing over top that captures exactly what this moment feels like. Pride. Unity. Momentum. This wasn’t just a group of people showing up. These were volunteers and canvassers who had just spent an entire day traveling town to town, knocking on doors, reaching communities with no permanent signing locations, and collecting hundreds of signatures for Alberta independence. And then they came together to celebrate. Young and old. Rural and urban. All united by one idea: 👉 Alberta can stand on its own 👉 Alberta deserves a future built by Albertans 👉 Alberta is waking up I’m proud to have been part of it. I was having a friendly conversation with a Canadian citizen who immigrated from Chile 28 years ago. He does not support Alberta independence. He said he wants Canada to stay together. Then a local Red Deer man walked up, assumed we were both pro-independence, and started swearing at us. When I told him we were just having a friendly conversation, the Chilean Canadian asked him a simple question: Why do you think these people want to separate? His answer? “I don’t know.” Then he just kept swearing. That moment says a lot. A 28-year Canadian immigrant was willing to ask the question. He could see that something has changed. He had real concerns about mass immigration, integration, and how the system has changed since he came here. But the “Forever Canada” local didn’t want to ask anything. He didn’t want to understand. He didn’t want to listen. He just wanted to defend the idea of Canada he still has in his head. When I asked him about mass immigration, he brushed it off and said Canada is the best place to live. Apparently millions of other people agree, because they are all showing up here. That is the problem. At the Forever Canada rally, a man started yelling at me about pipelines. His argument was basically: “Canada built you a pipeline, so you should be grateful.” But that completely misses the point. The Trans Mountain Expansion was originally estimated at about $5.4 billion. It eventually climbed to $34.2 billion after the Liberal government took over the project. That is not a success story. That is what happens when Ottawa delays, blocks, politicizes, nationalizes, and mismanages a project that the private sector was once prepared to build. Then another man walked up, told me I had my facts wrong, and when I asked him to explain, he just walked away. Forever Canada means, I'm right, its impossible for me to be wrong, and grrrrrrr... Albertans should be grateful that Ottawa eventually allowed a pipeline to exist after making it vastly more expensive than it needed to be. Do you still have hope for the future of Canada?
