Today, Council had to approve a wind down of the Green Line Program as a result of the Government of Alberta terminating the project on September 3. There was no negotiation or discussion of a different solution. Just a swift end to 1,000 jobs and 70+ contracts. And we as the City of Calgary carry the liability on all of this. Our hand was forced by the provincial government, and like many Calgarians, I am incredibly saddened.

Supervised Consumption Services at Sheldon Chumir Health Centre are operated by Alberta Health Services. Two years ago, I shared concerns related to public safety in the area, the impact on neighbours, and the draw on City of Calgary and Calgary Police resources with Provincial officials. Service providers and the data tell us one centralized site is not the answer. Drug poisonings are happening throughout the city. Since 2022, Calgarians have been waiting for the provincial government to offer additional or alternate solutions, given that health and addictions are provincial responsibilities. Today, I reinforce this message and urgency required to address this issue.

City Council made a critical mistake in approving the province’s Green Line plan. An elevated LRT through our downtown ignores businesses, property owners & public safety — risking the future of our core. This is not the right choice for Calgary.
