It's actually kind of insane how they managed to fit a hacking puzzle (that's usually hated in most games even in a vacuum) and fit it into moment to moment combat. Not only does it work but it somehow doesn't slow the pace of gameplay as much as you'd think. Combat is still fast as shit and you're constantly jumping or boosting around and there's strategy to the hacking too. Low-key it feels like a more complete version of what 9S's combat should've been in Automata.

DMC 1, 3, 4, 5. Ninja Gaiden 1-4, MGR, Bayonetta, Doom Eternal, arguably Elden Ring. Most good fighting games, Stellar Blade is at least comp, you can make an argument for Bloodborne, Armored Core 6, Monster Hunter, Titanfall 2, etc. Sekiro is a masterpiece but come on bruh we gotta stop acting like it has the best combat of all time. It does one play style well but you can name plenty of games across multiple genres that allow for more variety, more player expression and more ways to interact with enemies/the environment or simply require more technical skill and game knowledge.

This is the problem with photo-realism in video games. It has convinced an entire chunk of casual players that a games merit is based off how close it visually simulates reality. Thatโs because most HackโNโSlash donโt force you to learn the game. They incentivize you with things like a style meter or more currency, but you can beat them by doing the bare minimum of dodging and using one combo until you beat the game. Which isnโt how these games are meant to be played. So of course theyโre going to seem mindless if you play mindlessly.
