“…he was the only actor who didn’t bail on me.” Austin Abrams on why he didn’t exit Weapons after Zach Cregger lost his original cast. P.S. Cregger’s Resident Evil is awesome. The IMAX aspect ratio shift is worth seeing in that format. Really great filmmaking & performances.

Tom Cruise says he doesn’t make movies for opening weekend. His focus is on the evolution & lasting legacy of a film. #Digger is such a remarkable film directed by the brilliant Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Saw it for a 3rd time this weekend; this time in glorious 35mm VistaVision.

Wow. Marvel considered horizontalizing the Dutch (canted) angles in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR but it ended up being too expensive. I love the canted angles in that film. Thoughts? Clip from my “On Film…With Kevin McCarthy” podcast. Available wherever you get your podcasts.

"Well Holy S***, I'm doing this 25-years and no one's ever asked me that. Loved this part of my conversation with Colin Farrell. What is the movie you've seen the most in your life? And do you agree or disagree with ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD being Tarantino's best film?

Loved geeking out and talking filmmaking with Zendaya & Florence Pugh. Every time I've interviewed Zendaya, I've always been struck by her awesome passion for the craft of filmmaking. Here's Zendaya's answer & then I'll post Florence Pugh's in the thread. #DunePartTwo

"It's an important conversation. We gotta have it." Just finished a Zoom interview with David Dastmalchian for LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. Asked him about the use of the 3 AI images in the film. Filming was a couple years ago. Premiered at SXSW in 2023. All prior to the strike.

😂😂😂 Tom Cruise did part of the Digger monologue for me. My Digger spoiler episode with Tom Cruise & Alejandro G. Iñárritu is streaming now! This clip is edited around any spoilers. The intention of the question is, in itself, a spoiler but edited in a way to avoid ruining it for people who haven’t seen the film. Definitely watch the full chat for more context. This clip still speaks for itself as you can see how Cruise manages the emotional disconnect between characters and himself. I often ask actors about this idea of severing from a character and how they emotionally return to their selves; especially when playing such intense, dark and deeply emotional characters. Cruise speaks about how he manages that, giving a great example from the 1980s when he was prepping Rain Man in the mornings and then prepping Born on the Fourth Of July in the evenings. On top of that, he would do pickup shots for Cocktail on Sundays. Wow. It all comes down to being present in the moment. As Alejandro says in the longer conversation, it’s like riding a bicycle for Tom Cruise. Search “On Film…With Kevin McCarthy” wherever you get your podcasts. Tom Cruise Digger Warner Bros.

A thread of my recent interview with George Miller for FURIOSA. This was a very special conversation where Miller gives a true masterclass in filmmaking. If you have a chance, watch until the end of thread. There's a special moment that blew my mind. A wild coincidence. (1/4)

Tom Cruise and I geeked out about cinematography while standing with the Beaumont Vista Vision camera that Emmanuel Lubezki used for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘DIGGER’. I can’t believe that’s a real sentence. Talking lenses, lighting and large format. That camera is so stunning.

This is absolutely incredible & an amazing reminder of why I love filmmaking. In CIVIL WAR, are we seeing the actual photos taken by Kirsten Dunst & Cailee Spaeny? This answer went beyond anything I could have imagined. What an insanely cool idea. I need BTS footage. #CivilWar

The art of the movie title card reveal. In Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, the title is revealed 18-minutes into the film. This lead to a discussing about title reveals in films like the Coen Brothers’ Raising Arizona and the Gaspar Noé film, Climax. Fav title reveal?

😂😂😂 Zach Cregger on how he’s been attempting to pay homage to the fire extinguisher scene in Gaspar Noé’s Irreversible. Says he tried in Weapons & Barbarian, which were great scenes. He will try again in the Spielberg/Amblin produced film, The Flood. Can’t wait to see this.

I’ve seen The Odyssey 13 times in theatres. Which film have you seen the most in a cinema?

Elliot Page is one of the best actors working today. Sat down for an hour long conversation about Elliot’s incredible career from Hard Candy to Juno to Inception &, of course, his brilliant performance as Sinon in The Odyssey. Clip from my “On Film…With Kevin McCarthy” podcast.

Jonathan Nolan reflects on 10 years since the release of INTERSTELLAR. Jonathan originally wrote the script for Steven Spielberg. Loved this insight into the character of Murph and his reaction to seeing that incredible McConaughey sequence. Still my favorite Nolan(s) film.
