This is becoming unbearable as we are approaching the peak #oliveridley nesting season. 21 carcasses found in #kovalam alone today morning. Illegal trawling wreaking havoc and #TamilNadu govt machinery is just watching. Yesterday, fisheries dept received information on ray fish net deployed at Alamparaikuppam, which is a notorious fishing village, and an estimated 100 turtles allegedly got entangled. So far, no action is taken. Trawling, use of gill nets & ray fish nets are strictly prohibited with 5 nautical miles. Look at the impunity with which they are constructing. Common people have to run from pillar to post to get legitimate permissions and these guys have no fear of law. This is a no development zone and the land is classified as Grama Natham, as per revenue records, which means meant for landless people. The violations are happening close to State capital #Chennai. CMOTamilNadu Supriya Sahu IAS rahul nadh please take immediate action. Unless, at least, few of these illegal structures are demolished, there will not be a deterrent. I was at Injambakkam today. Counted 11 dead #OliveRidley turtles myself. The entire first round of nesting population of mother turtles is swiped off I think. Experts say only 20% of dead turtles wash ashore so the actual death toll would be much higher.
