Polish heavy cavalry and Teutonic Knights clashing at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, depicted in Polish movie Krzyżacy (1960). No CGI, no grey filter. Multitude of extras and historically accurate colorful banners instead, helping to recognize the armies in the dust.

The most imposing depictions of Ottoman Empire you're ever going to find on screen can be found in Romanian movies filmed during communist times. A compilation of clips of Ottoman army invading from the movie Stephen the Great - Vaslui 1475 (1975), featuring thousands of extras.

This is how Alsatian language sounds. I found a rare video of football manager Arsène Wenger speaking in his native Alsatian. The former Arsenal manager grew up in a small village of Duttlenheim, where everybody spoke Alsatian, and only learned French in school.

The movie Vlad Tepes (1979) feels so different from modern movies because Vlad Dracula never doubts himself or has regrets. From start to finish he is firm in his belief that he has to unleash terror on the enemies of his land. Unbreakable, unyielding.

This movie Illyricum (2022) went for linguistic accuracy. Alongside Latin (spoken by the Romans), linguistic experts also tried their best to reconstruct the ancient Illyrian language. Look at the sinister scene of Illyrian barbarian praying to goddess Anzotica, vowing revenge.

Birds of prey are extremely aristocratic. One of my favorite lesser known birds of prey are honey buzzards who specialize in raiding and destroying nests of wasps and hornets. Even the big Asian hornets are completely powerless against this mighty bird!

The Battle of Rocroi in 1643 as depicted in the movie Alatriste (2006). An incredibly accurate portrayal of pike and shot era tactics, which also captures the brutality and intensity of this type of warfare. Do you agree that this is one of the best battle scenes ever?

Movies should promote chivalrous values to impressionable youths. This is a short but extremely powerful scene in Vlad Țepeș (1979). Loyalty was as one of the most important medieval chilvarous values and treachery the most despised. One of the many reasons I like this movie.

Another epic history movie produced in Eastern Europe. The movie Skanderbeg (1953) was produced as a joint Albanian-Soviet production to commemorate Albanian medieval hero. This scene shows the Siege of Krujë in 1450, where a large Ottoman army was repelled.
