Croatian movie Konjanik (2003) is set in late 17th century Venetian-Ottoman wars. It depicts a historically authentic depiction of conversion from Islam to Catholicism. Notice that phrases like "hate the false Muslim faith" would be used in such conversions before Vatican II council. When I saw this scene, out of curiosity and as I history enthusiast I went to check how accurate this exact rhetoric would be, and I actually found Croatian edition of 1929 Roman Ritual (Rituale Romanum) which included the exact same phrase that was used in the movie. Before the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), the Catholic Church would include a strong condemnation of previous religions during conversions, a renunciation of prior errors, heresies, sects etc. This is very different from modern times when such rhetoric was effectively dropped by the Catholic Church. What I found especially interesting is that that Croatian version of 1929 Roman Ritual included exact phrases that should be used for converts specific religions, not just for Islam. Here is an English translation of these instructions: "If the catechumen has converted from pagan error or from false gods and idolaters, the priest shall say: 'Hate the idols, reject the images.' If he is from the Jews, let him say: 'Hate the Jewish unbelief, reject the Hebrew superstition.' If he is from the Muslims, let him say: 'Hate the Muslim unbelief, reject the perverse, unbelieving sect.' If from heretics, and his baptism was not performed as it should have been, let him say: 'Hate the evil of heresy, reject the destructive sects of the perverse, and name specifically the sect from which he comes.'" For me, historic accuracy of rhetoric and dialogues in a movie is just as important as historic accuracy of armors, weapons, clothes etc. I want to hear people speak like they would speak in those times. So I really appreciate such details in language that is being used.
