5 years ago today, hundreds of Islamists gathered outside Batley Grammar School after a teacher showed a picture of the Prophet Muhammad in a lesson. He was threatened & forced into hiding. 5 years on he is sadly STILL in hiding. This is appalling. We must fight for free speech.

Over the moon that the Gvt has finally listened & u-turned. This victory belongs to the brave bereaved parents fighting to protect other people's children, the health professionals who spoke out, & the parents who made their voices heard. Together, we did not give up. Today is a huge step forward for protecting childhood & backing parents, so they do not have to fight big tech & screens alone.

Labour have spent months telling me that banning phones in schools was an unnecessary gimmick. A week ago an education minister said Labour had “solved the problem of phones in schools.” We did not give up the fight & I’m glad they have finally listened & u-turned.

If reports are true the Education Secretary is set to announce a lower-level qualification aimed at white working-class pupils. That’s watering down standards for some of our most deprived children. If that’s the plan, soft bigotry of low expectations is back and it’s an insult.

Performing irreversible puberty blocker trials on children is wrong. It’s madness that the Gvt have banned social media for U16s but believe 11 year olds can consent to changes that will affect them forever. This is what happens when you have a Gvt unhinged from any principle. Sign our petition to protect childhood:

4 months Bridget Phillipson has been sitting on teachers’ pay. Labour are making a difficult job to budget for schools, even harder. Phillipson, in her own words, is committing a ‘complete dereliction of duty’. It’s one rule for them, & one rule for everyone else.

If Burnham is serious that too many young people have been pushed to university & he wants to reverse Labour’s threshold freeze, then we have a plan to fix this. Our New Deal for Young People would deliver fundamental reform & I’m ready to work with him in the face of opposition from his backbenchers to make it happen 👇

The legacy of the PM & Bridget Phillipson will be destroying school standards, leaving schools in the red, & teachers' jobs on the line. It’s no surprise that 72% of teachers & support staff think this Government has performed badly on education. Teachers & pupils deserve better

Three times Bridget Phillipson failed to say when she will publish the long overdue guidance for schools on gender questioning children. It’s been 20 months since the final Cass report & yet she is still using this as a reason to drag her feet. We don’t need any more excuses.

Ministers still can’t say if raising the social media age to 16 is even something they’ll commit to. Labour must stop dragging their feet. Half-hearted measures & consultations are not good enough. If MPs truly want children off social media, then they should vote for it tonight.

The PM recently declared that the ambition for 50% of young people to go to university “isn’t right for our times.” He’s right. That’s why we had already abolished it. Yet his plan for 2/3 of young people in higher-level learning, with only 10% in higher technical education or apprenticeships, would actually increase the proportion going to university from 50% to 57%. Only this PM could abolish a target that didn’t exist, and then accidentally announce one that goes further than the non-existent target he just pretended to abolish.

We’ve achieved so much in a matter of months. At the start of this Bill Labour said they weren’t looking at a social media ban. Last night we had a huge commitment from the Govt that they will impose age restrictions for children u16. This is a massive win for parents & children.
