Why does a spinning object speed up as it shrinks? This Hoberman sphere demonstration illustrates the law of conservation of angular momentum. Moment of inertia measures how mass is distributed relative to the axis of rotation. When the sphere collapses, its mass moves inward. This decrease in inertia forces the angular velocity to increase because the total momentum of the system must remain constant. This same principle allows figure skaters to accelerate their spins and causes collapsing stars to become rapidly rotating pulsars. It is a fundamental rule of physics. Geometry determines speed.
