Odysseus wasn’t driven by destiny nearly as much as he was by his own ego. People keep saying he only challenged monsters because the gods forced his hand. I don’t buy it. Take the Cyclops. Yes, he was Poseidon’s son, but Odysseus didn’t know that. Most of the men in the cave never even heard Polyphemus reveal who his father was. As far as Odysseus was concerned, he was just another enemy. The moment the Cyclops spat out his helmet, Odysseus’ pride took over, and he fired back. Then there’s the Sirens. He already knew no one had ever survived hearing their song with open ears. A cautious leader would’ve avoided the risk. Odysseus did the opposite because he wanted to prove he could do what no one else had ever done. His greatest strength wasn’t wisdom. It was believing he could outsmart everyone—even fate itself. So was Odysseus truly a legendary hero… or was his ego the real villain of The Odyssey?
