The final epic battle between Frankenstein vs. Baragon. It's hard to believe the initial story treatment was written by Jerry Sohl, a sci-fi writer who worked on Star Trek, The Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. Supposedly, he even visited the set but I have no photos.

Dogora attacking the record-breaking Wakato Bridge in Kitakyushu. Built two years before in 1962 the movie is like a travelogue they even travel in the famous blue train. Two best things here are the part-animated destruction of the bridge and Dogora gracefully leaving the area.

This was the first of three films which Toho co-produced with UPA whose side famously wanted a gfiant octopus at the end. This bothered Ishiro Honda and a delegation even flew to Los Angeles to try to convince them this was a bad idea. The scene was filmed anyway but later cut.

Baragon's brutal and lovable rampage. Because we haven't seen him before this movie his late appearance feels pretty random but it also divides it into two distinct parts. The famous fake horse wasn't just there because it was fun but also for the scale as it appears with Baragon

King Ghidorah's awakening. A very effective scene played completely straight which likely explains why, in contrast, scenes with Godzilla and Rodan are often comedic. As always I have to point out it's a probable influence for the awakening of Majin Buu in Dragon Ball.

The scene that serves as a reference to Godzilla's entrance in 1954 movie. Akira Ifukube didn't want any music in this scene but Ishiro Honda disagreed. This Godzilla isn't scary and looks loveable but doesn't have any of the qualities that will make him change in the future.

Koji Furuhata is pretty good as Frankenstein (name of the monster this time). It's a shame that like many Showa era actors he completely disappeared from history. There are some myths about him such as that he was an amateur or that he was deaf-mute (he talked in other films).

Impressive launch of FFE Space Fighters and just a brief fragment of battle in a film that's almost all fighting. I've mentioned it like a dozen times that the fighters were inspired by the real "space plane" X-15 first introduced in 1959. Only Toho did things like that then.

The great monster conference where all use the so-called Monster Language (モンスター語). Ishiro Honda really disliked scenes like this, others, like Mike Dougherty, found it fascinating and I agree. It's a funny scene but t's just so rare to know the perspective of the monsters.

In Japan it's "Three Giant Monsters" and in the U.S. "Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster." One named after the good monsters the other after the villain Before they change Godzilla and Rodan fight. I like that mechanical model of Godzilla we see in some distant and close up shots
