A historic chapter in Mumbai’s underground connectivity. TBM-2 ‘Arjuna’ has launched from the Thane side to begin excavation of the second tunnel of the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, taking India’s longest and deepest urban road tunnel project another major step forward. Arjuna, the country’s largest single-shield hard-rock TBM for an urban tunnel, will work alongside TBM-1 ‘Nayak’, which is already progressing with excavation of the first tunnel. Together, the two machines will create 10.25 km of twin tunnels as part of the 11.84-km Thane–Borivali corridor, passing deep beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park with minimal surface disturbance. Once completed, the project is expected to transform the Thane–Borivali journey, bringing travel time down from around 60–90 minutes to approximately 15 minutes, while easing congestion, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, and creating a faster, safer and more efficient connection across the MMR. A major milestone in the journey of Mumbai 3.0. MMRDA has signed a consultancy agreement with Singapore-headquartered Surbana Jurong Infrastructure Pte. Ltd. to prepare the Vision Document, Master Plan and planning framework for Mumbai 3.0, marking the formal commencement of the project's master planning exercise. The agreement, signed by Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, and Mr. Avinash Mishra, Chief Executive, South Asia, Surbana Jurong Infrastructure, in the presence of Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, takes forward the strategic partnership announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year and marks the transition from vision to implementation. Drawing on Surbana Jurong Infrastructure's global expertise in urban planning and its legacy in shaping Singapore's world-renowned urban development, the consultancy will prepare the blueprint for Mumbai 3.0, covering land use, mobility, infrastructure, utilities, sustainability, digital infrastructure, Transit-Oriented Development, mixed-use districts and future economic growth. Spread across 323.44 sq. km and 124 villages in Panvel, Uran and Pen, Mumbai 3.0 is strategically located near Atal Setu, Navi Mumbai International Airport and JNPT. Envisioned as Maharashtra's next major urban and economic growth centre, it will support residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and logistics-led development through globally benchmarked planning and world-class infrastructure. Mumbai Moves Forward! The final link of the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road is now open, completing the integrated 10.30-km SCLR network between the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway. The 1.40-km Bharat Nagar Road (University Area)–Vakola Junction Elevated Corridor, built under SCLR Extension Phase II, marks the final and critical link in a network developed progressively since the original SCLR opened. With the Phase I extensions and the completion of Phase II, the SCLR network now provides end-to-end signal-free east–west connectivity across: EEH → Chembur → Tilak Nagar → Kapadia Nagar → Kurla → Kalina → BKC → Mumbai University → Vakola → WEH The newly opened elevated corridor establishes seamless two-way connectivity between BKC and the WEH. Traffic from BKC will merge directly with the SCLR cable-stayed bridge, while traffic from the WEH will move from the existing Vakola Flyover onto the new elevated corridor. The completed network will help motorists bypass Kalina, Vakola and Kalanagar, with travel time expected to reduce by approximately 35 minutes on key journeys. It will also strengthen access to BKC, Mumbai University, Mumbai International Airport, major commercial hubs and surrounding residential areas, while improving commuter convenience, road safety and overall travel efficiency, and helping reduce congestion, fuel consumption, operating costs and vehicular emissions. MMRDA Begins Resurfacing Works on Atal Setu for Enhanced Durability & Riding Comfort The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated comprehensive resurfacing and pavement restoration works on the Atal Setu, ensuring long-term strength and superior riding comfort for commuters. To avoid complete closure of the bridge, the work is being carried out in phases. The third and fourth lanes will be resurfaced first, and once completed, the remaining two lanes will be taken up. After observing pavement distress in certain localised stretches on the Navi Mumbai–bound carriageway, starting at the 10.4 km mark, mainly on the outer heavy-vehicle lanes, MMRDA conducted a detailed technical review. Temporary rectification using mastic asphalt was carried out during the monsoon to maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure commuter safety. Now that the monsoon has subsided, full-fledged resurfacing operations have commenced. The works are being executed under the expert guidance of IIT Bombay, covering every stage — from material selection and mix design to plant-level and on-site quality control. Since the project is still under the defect liability period, the entire cost will be borne by the contractor. MMRDA remains committed to maintaining world-class standards of quality, safety, and durability on the Atal Setu — ensuring a safe, seamless, and smooth driving experience on India’s longest sea bridge. Mahalaxmi to Get India's First Travellator-Equipped Skywalk Linking Monorail, Metro 3 and Suburban Railway MMRDA has completed approximately 90% of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, a landmark initiative that will seamlessly connect Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3 and Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station through India's first travellator-equipped skywalk, making travel across Mumbai faster, safer and more convenient. Once operational, the integrated interchange will reduce transfer time by approximately 20 minutes, improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli, and encourage greater use of public transport through seamless multimodal connectivity. Project Highlights: • Approximately 283-metre-long integrated pedestrian bridge • 11-metre-wide structure for smooth passenger movement • Six travellators with a combined length of 176 metres • Two passenger lifts for universal accessibility • Capacity to accommodate approximately 4,500 passengers every hour Built in one of Mumbai's most utility-congested corridors, the project reflects MMRDA's engineering expertise. A 1,800 mm diameter storm water drain was safely relocated before foundation works began, while adjacent water supply and sewer pipelines remained undisturbed, ensuring uninterrupted civic services throughout construction. The project was also executed without felling a single tree, with traffic managed in close coordination with the Traffic Police and the annual Ganesh Visarjan processions along Sane Guruji Marg continuing without disruption. More than a pedestrian bridge, this is another step towards a truly integrated public transport ecosystem where Metro, Monorail and suburban rail work together as one seamless network for Mumbai.
