Austria's Federal Minister Tests Atal Setu's Emergency Call Box — And Likes What He Hears During a site visit to Atal Setu, India's longest sea bridge, Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism of the Republic of Austria, Mr. Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, made a surprise stopover at one of the bridge's Emergency Call Boxes (ECBs) Installed at regular intervals, these ECBs are part of the bridge’s quick crisis response infrastructure, enabling anyone in distress on the bridge to connect instantly with the command centre for immediate assistance. The minister, who was accompanied by a high-level Austrian delegation, tested the system on the spot. The response from the command centre was immediate. He and the other delegates were impressed. A major milestone in the journey of Mumbai 3.0. MMRDA has signed a consultancy agreement with Singapore-headquartered Surbana Jurong Infrastructure Pte. Ltd. to prepare the Vision Document, Master Plan and planning framework for Mumbai 3.0, marking the formal commencement of the project's master planning exercise. The agreement, signed by Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, and Mr. Avinash Mishra, Chief Executive, South Asia, Surbana Jurong Infrastructure, in the presence of Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, takes forward the strategic partnership announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year and marks the transition from vision to implementation. Drawing on Surbana Jurong Infrastructure's global expertise in urban planning and its legacy in shaping Singapore's world-renowned urban development, the consultancy will prepare the blueprint for Mumbai 3.0, covering land use, mobility, infrastructure, utilities, sustainability, digital infrastructure, Transit-Oriented Development, mixed-use districts and future economic growth. Spread across 323.44 sq. km and 124 villages in Panvel, Uran and Pen, Mumbai 3.0 is strategically located near Atal Setu, Navi Mumbai International Airport and JNPT. MC - 1, Vikram Kumar, IAS, conducted a site inspection at the BKC-Vakola connector of Phase 2 of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. He reviewed the ongoing works and gave instructions to contractors, agencies and concerned officials to expedite the work and also maintain safety and quality of construction. The SCLR Phase 2 is nearing completion with 98% physical work already completed. This is the final phase of the SCLR project. The SCLR corridor, with its multiple arms, elevated sections and critical interchanges, now stands at the threshold of full operationalisation, marking the transition from piecemeal connectivity to a fully integrated urban mobility system. 🚨 IMPORTANT UPDATE ✅ Traffic has resumed on the Pune–Mumbai Connecting Link Road. Vehicular movement has been restored after completion of extensive safety operations. Despite relentless monsoon conditions, including heavy rainfall, strong winds and low visibility, MSRDC teams worked continuously to ensure the route could be reopened safely. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Beneath Mumbai, momentum is building. MMRDA has completed 250 metres of underground tunnelling for the Orange Gate–Marine Drive Urban Road Tunnel, powered by India's largest slurry shield TBM for an urban road. And it keeps pushing forward. One of India's most complex urban tunnelling projects, the Orange Gate–Marine Drive Tunnel involves construction of twin tunnels spanning over 7 km, passing beneath Central Railway, Western Railway, and Metro Line 3 with precision engineering every metre of the way. 4 hours. Two massive trusses. One major step forward for Mumbai’s next high-speed road corridor. MMRDA has achieved a major construction milestone on the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension (EFE), with the successful erection of the two Main Trusses of its Segment Launcher, each 59 metres long and weighing 160 tonnes, on the busy Eastern Express Highway. The entire complex operation was completed within a record 4-hour window, with the actual erection of both trusses taking just 1 hour. The operation was executed through meticulous planning, stringent safety measures and seamless coordination between MMRDA and the Mumbai Traffic Police. So, what happens next? With the Main Trusses now in place, the Segment Launcher will begin erecting 1,632 precast segments, each weighing approximately 90 MT, span by span. These will form the 25-metre-wide single-cell segment superstructure, accelerating viaduct construction and taking the project into its next major phase. And what does this mean for Mumbai? The EFE is a fully elevated, 6-lane high-speed corridor connecting Anand Nagar in Thane with Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, designed to create a faster, more reliable route while easing congestion on the Eastern Express Highway, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport corridors.
