Rory McIlroy on the paradox of chasing success. “I think it would be a pretty unfulfilling pursuit if you’re just chasing records and chasing results…If all you’re thinking about is winning and results, you’re playing the wrong game.” One of the great paradoxes of performance is that the outcomes we want are rarely achieved by obsessing over the outcomes themselves. Ironically, the less your identity depends on the outcome, the more freedom you often have to perform at your best. If you enjoy golf or mental game lessons, follow along this weekend as I’ll be sharing more highlights and insights from the Open championship. 🎥: The Open

Tom Brady explains his mental edge and why practice (not gameday) creates separation. "There was a part of me that was a psychopath out there. I was extremely hypercompetitive every day. I didn't feel like let's get to Sunday and now it's the time...Every day is the time to give your best, even in practice." Every day your standards are either reinforced or lowered by how you treat practice. You don’t flip a switch into excellence. You rehearse it daily. 📹: Impaulsive Podcast

Josh Kerr on his mindset behind breaking the 27-year-old world record in the mile. “My two pacemakers set the tone, the river, they set the stream and all I had to do was sit in that water for as long as I could, follow it and not fight it. I wasn’t on a chase today. I was just flowing with the conditions.” Flow cannot be forced. The harder you try to manufacture it, the more tension and interference you often create. Extraordinary effort and performances don't always need to feel strained. Oftentimes, the best performances happen when you stop trying to make the moment become something and fully cooperate with what the moment is giving you. This captures one of the fundamental paradoxes in performance. You gain control by knowing what not to control. 📹: FloTrack

Dusty May on how his ambition has evolved and how becoming a dad led him to redefine success. "I was probably 25 and I was incredibly ambitious and and I was trying to get to the top quickly. And then once Ann and I started having children, my entire perspective changed. I simply wanted to enjoy who I worked with, enjoy who I coached, and try to be the absolute best coach I could be." The longer I work with coaches, the more I realize that the most fulfilled ones aren't always the ones with the premier titles or the highest paid. They're the ones who have clarity about why they coach in the first place. Ambition isn't just chasing bigger jobs or dream destinations. Real ambition is chasing a better version of yourself. You don't have to choose between being ambitious and being fulfilled. The goal is to chase excellence while protecting the people and priorities that make the pursuit worthwhile in the first place. 📹: Dallas Mavericks

Mookie Betts describes his nerves in Game 7 of the World Series and what he told himself before the final out. "That 9th inning is probably the most nervous I've ever been on a baseball field...As Yoshi was throwing the ball, I was literally talking to myself like 'Be nasty, Mook. Be nasty right now.'" Even the best in the world need to remind themselves of their greatness. When nerves make the game speed up, your inner voice is a tool to slow it down. 📹: MLB Network

Scottie Scheffler on why it’s important to periodically reset and reconnect to why you compete in the first place. “It’s always important to reset yourself and remember why I’m doing this…Sometimes I get really soaked into the competition.” Becoming an elite performer is a healthy balance between being present and having perspective. Presence helps you zoom in and stay engaged in the process. Perspective helps you zoom out and connect to the why behind your pursuit. One of the healthiest habits you can build is creating moments to zoom out and remember what drew you to this pursuit in the first place. Your “why” will never be something you discover once. It’s something you have to return (and re-commit) to again and again. 🎥: Open Championship

Louisiana Tech head football coach Sonny Cumbie has learned firsthand that more hours don't always lead to better leadership. "At the end of the day, when my brain is done, I'm going home, and the problems that are here will still be here tomorrow. I'll serve our team better with a fresh mind and being well rested." The longer I've worked with coaches and leaders, the more I've realized that the goal isn't to squeeze every ounce of energy out of yourself in the service of others. It's to sustainably show up at your best so your people (and you) benefit in the process. Sometimes the most productive thing a leader can do is go home, recover, and come back tomorrow ready to think clearly and serve others well. 📹: Win More, Live Better Podcast (Ep. 261)

Matthew Stafford shares how his QB coach, Dave Ragone, once studied his performance after turnovers and sacks. They found his stats on the next possession are exponentially better than league average. “I just equate that to being able to compartmentalize…Be honest and real about it and not ultra emotional.” In performance environments, your execution on the next play often depends on how long you stay attached to the last one. The key is not wasting energy arguing with reality and training yourself to respond and re-engage quickly. 📹: Magic Mind

Mike D'Antoni's advice to aspiring NBA head coaches was surprisingly simple. "You have to have the bond between the coaches and you have to invest time in that." The culture your players experience is often a reflection of the culture your staff experiences. If your coaches don't trust one another...If they don't enjoy being around one another...If they aren't connected... Don't expect your players to magically create what the staff hasn't modeled. Culture doesn't start in the player's locker room. It starts in the coaches' room. 📹: Win More, Live Better Podcast (Ep. 265)

Scottie Scheffler on the power of clear targets and consistent routines. “I'm picturing exactly what I want the ball to do. It's not anything new to me, I'm just sticking to my routine.” Elite performance often comes from having a clear, repeatable process that keeps your attention anchored on the right things under pressure. 📹: College Golf Fellowship

Tiger Woods on what it takes to be a savage. "It's do all the nitty gritty details that are ugly, hard, and mundane...Quite frankly, a lot of times you don't see the results for maybe years to come, but it's the little details that it takes each and everyday to be successful." Excellence filters people out through boredom, discomfort, and delayed rewards. It lives in the details that most people don't have the discipline or patience to honor every day. 📹: Skratch

Steve Kerr shares that one of the most valuable things he's learned as a coach is to stop beating himself up after failure. "I've had to unlearn the tendency to beat myself up after failure...I'm going to lose. I'm going to make poor decisions that I regret later. But losing sleep over them and beating myself up is not at all productive." A lot of coaches are great at helping players recover from mistakes, but many struggle to extend that same grace to themselves. You can prepare relentlessly, care deeply, and still make decisions you wish you could take back. The question isn't whether you'll make mistakes. Every coach does. Similar to athletes, the question is how you'll choose to respond after them...For your players and yourself. 📹: Consello

Sometimes the most meaningful leadership lessons are the simplest. Erin Matson shares a great story about receiving a 30-second voicemail from Hall of Fame basketball coach, Roy Williams. “Erin, I just want to tell you that I’m proud of you…I enjoy watching your team…You’re doing amazing things. Just keep on keeping on.” Sometimes the most impactful thing a coach can do is take 30 seconds to let someone know: I see you, I believe in you, and keep going. Those moments may feel small to the leader, but they rarely feel small to the person receiving them. 📹: Win More, Live Better Podcast (Episode 236)

This is coaching gold from Emma Hayes. "If we choose easy, we stay home in nicey nicey environments...All of this around us is for us...This is the moment for us as a group we go one level harder." Growth rarely asks us to get comfortable. It asks us to raise our standard. 📹: USWNT

Andrew Luck on why you don't rise to the occasion, you settle to the level of your training. "We practiced those high-pressure situations all the time...If we wanted to go out and compete on gameday it wasn't a 'flip a switch and go.' We learned to compete on the practice field." Don't expect your team to execute under pressure if you haven't consistently trained under it. Athletes rarely outperform the environments they've consistently trained in. 📹: Think Fast Talk Smart Podcast

Mike Vrabel on the most important thing he's learned about building a culture in the NFL. "I've learned that we can have different personalities. We can't have different mentalities." Strong cultures don’t ask people to be the same. They ask people to commit to the same standards and non-negotiables. 📹: Bussin' With the Boys

"I'd say this to any coach...If your job is your identity, you're really going to struggle." This was part of Rick Barnes’ response to being asked what advice he’d give Lady Vols’ head coach, Kim Caldwell, following the birth of her son last year. He emphasized the importance of finding a balance between coaching and parenting and offered this reminder for all coaches: "This is what we do, it can't be who you are." 🎥: Emilie Rae Cochrane

Christian McCaffrey describes his mentality over the course of an NFL season. “It’s 17 one-week seasons is the way I look at it…As a player in the NFL, you’re trained to forget…forget the last gameplan, forget the last play, forget the last team you played.” “You’re in this constant mode of on to the next, completely being present where you are now.” Letting go is a skill. Being present is a skill. Elite performance requires both. 🎥: B Scar TV podcast

Steph Curry shares the smallest detail in his game that helps separate him from others. "Breathing is a skill…Controlling your breathing, recovery, controlling your nerves…I’ve really tried to master that." There’s a reason the breath is often called the bridge between the mind and body. And the best part? You always have access to it. No matter the moment. No matter the pressure. No matter the environment. It’s your fastest way to recover and your most reliable way to slow the game down and reset. 📹: SLAM NBA

Great story from Coach K on running into a former camper and the lesson this man carried with him. Coach K asked all the kids at the camp... "Who do you talk to the most?" “Yourself… so when you talk to yourself, why not be yourself's best friend?” A lot of performers are entertaining an internal voice that’s critical, impatient, and unforgiving. We say things to ourselves we’d never say to a teammate and then we expect confidence, consistency, and composure to follow. You're in a lifelong conversation with yourself. Make it one worth having. 📹: Sons and Daughters Podcast
