Rory McIlroy on the paradox of chasing success. “I think it would be a pretty unfulfilling pursuit if you’re just chasing records and chasing results…If all you’re thinking about is winning and results, you’re playing the wrong game.” One of the great paradoxes of performance is that the outcomes we want are rarely achieved by obsessing over the outcomes themselves. I wasn’t on a chase today. I was just flowing with the conditions.” Flow cannot be forced. The harder you try to manufacture it, the more tension and interference you often create. Extraordinary effort and performances don't always need to feel strained. Oftentimes, the best performances happen when you stop trying to make the moment become something and fully cooperate with what the moment is giving you. They're the ones who have clarity about why they coach in the first place. Ambition isn't just chasing bigger jobs or dream destinations. Real ambition is chasing a better version of yourself. You don't have to choose between being ambitious and being fulfilled. The longer I've worked with coaches and leaders, the more I've realized that the goal isn't to squeeze every ounce of energy out of yourself in the service of others. It's to sustainably show up at your best so your people (and you) benefit in the process. "I've had to unlearn the tendency to beat myself up after failure...I'm going to lose. I'm going to make poor decisions that I regret later. But losing sleep over them and beating myself up is not at all productive." A lot of coaches are great at helping players recover from mistakes, but many struggle to extend that same grace to themselves. You can prepare relentlessly, care deeply, and still make decisions you wish you could take back. The question isn't whether you'll make mistakes. Every coach does. Sometimes the most meaningful leadership lessons are the simplest. Erin Matson shares a great story about receiving a 30-second voicemail from Hall of Fame basketball coach, Roy Williams. “Erin, I just want to tell you that I’m proud of you…I enjoy watching your team…You’re doing amazing things. We say things to ourselves we’d never say to a teammate and then we expect confidence, consistency, and composure to follow. You're in a lifelong conversation with yourself.
