Let’s talk about RIR, or reps in reserve. I felt like I could get 1 more at 4 reps, yet dug deep and got almost 3 more. If I had Dorian Yates yelling at me, I could have probably gotten 10 more. The issue with these arbitrary rules like RIR and RPE is they don’t account for the mental aspect of lifting. Hence why, since I’m obviously not as smart and awesome as “the science” community and my pro card was a fluke, and I certainly can’t read studies or even the menu at IHOP, I just go until I can’t do another full rep with decent form. Most people train like p*ssies already. Imagine trying to have someone soft as charmin guess how many reps they have left at 4 reps in. Stop overthinking it. No need to go beyond failure, but just lift the damn weight until you can’t do a good rep and then put it down. Or not, whatever. 😂

A recent post circulating from Andrew Huberman claims that low reps don’t build muscle and that high reps are necessary for muscle growth. However, this doesn’t align with the data I’ve studied. At the core of muscle building is the principle of overload and pushing your muscles close to failure. It’s often said you should leave about one rep “in the tank” — though this can be tricky to gauge. In my training routine, I start with warm-ups, then perform 1-2 intense sets before moving on. Each muscle group is worked 2-3 times per week. Now, consider this: can doing 12-20 half-hearted reps truly build more muscle than a few well-executed, heavy sets? The answer is clear—quality and intensity triumph over mere quantity. Support this page by shopping at Tiger Fitness !

Smith machine or not. Too low of an incline or not…. This was still a heavy shoulder press. 😂 Having a blast here in Costa Rica.

“That was fun, but not as fun as tackling people.” Preston Lobliner had these words of wisdom after his first day of kicking camp with James Wilhoit. Without any training, he was the only kid in his league last year who could kick extra points, and that was HUGE since they are worth 2 points since nobody does it. With Middle School Football upon us, we are excited to see him contribute to his team as an accurate and powerful kicker and an all out DAWG on offense and defense. This was 30 yards, and after this camp and learning how to actually kick, I expect to hit 40+ by the time the season hits. Also the best news ever for us, he is starting back in wrestling next week daily after injuring his elbow at practice the day after winning state so we will start working on that 3rd state championship! SUPER PROUD of this kid!

He did it! Preston Lobliner hit 400lbs high-box-squat during football season! He struggled on this one - for the rest of the season we will stick to doubles and triples. Gaining strength in-season is the goal and usually doesn’t happen, but Preston is diligent with his programming. And once again, I hate having to say this, but WE KNOW that this isn’t a full squat. We do those as well. It’s just another tool in the toolbox.

My son, Preston Lobliner , has been joining Centennial High School’s football team in summer training. AthletesbyLegacy is their performance coach. The new coaching staff has instilled team culture like I’ve never seen. This is how it’s done. By the way, 295lbs on the bar!
