I’m often asked about the pegboard scene in VISION QUEST. That was all me. No stunt doubles or safety measures. I trained for a long time and had to climb it several times to get all the angles. The “trick” is not to over extend, so you’d be pulling up your entire body weight. You have to keep it compact. While shooting CUTTHROAT ISLAND in Malta, I brought my 16mm camera to make a black-and-white short film. When the production blew up the pirate ship, I captured the massive explosion. This was one of the last big-budget studio films to rely almost entirely on practical in-camera effects and stunts. Regardless of its initial reception, making this film was the adventure of a lifetime. This is from a recent scan of my original camera negative.

For anyone who’s ever faced a personal challenge, it doesn’t get much better than the 'Six Minutes' speech in VISION QUEST. This scene wasn’t in the 1979 novel by Terry Davis. Elmo's monologue was written specifically for the film by screenwriter Darryl Ponicsan (THE LAST DETAIL, TAPS). Actor J. C. Quinn absolutely knocks it out of the park here. Jonathan Demme's MARRIED TO THE MOB had an early post-credits scene where Michelle Pfeiffer and I dance along the steps of the NY State Supreme Court building at 60 Centre Street in lower Manhattan. Michelle slipped on some ice and fell backwards over a railing. Thankfully I was quick enough to catch her legs before her head hit the concrete.

Journey’s “Only the Young” plays as Louden Swain runs across multiple bridges spanning the Spokane River during the opening credits of VISION QUEST. Director Harold Becker used these bridges as a metaphor for his coming-of-age story where crossing a body of water symbolizes transition, rebirth, and leaving the past behind. Otto (Gary Kasper) confronts Louden about dropping down to 168 to wrestle “The Shute” in this scene from VISION QUEST. Gary actually tried out for the role of Shute, but it ultimately went to Frank Jasper. That’s a young Forest Whitaker as “Balldozer” in the opening shot. Great tunes! Louden Swain warms up to “Lunatic Fringe” before taking on Shute. In the original 1979 novel by Terry Davis, the story ends right after Louden runs out and the whistle blows. We never learn the outcome of the match. This is a great trailer for the 4K release of FULL METAL JACKET. It premiered 39 years ago #OnThisDay in Beverly Hills, CA. It was the longest production I’ve ever been involved with. While working with Kubrick in London, we found out my wife was pregnant, my son was born, and he turned 1 — all before the film was complete. I just found this video! Last year UFC President and CEO Dana White joined me to introduce a special 40th anniversary screening of VISION QUEST at the Fox Theater in Spokane, Washington (where we made the movie)! Cash Stone was my wrestling coach and trainer. He also played the referee at the end of the film!
