🚨 TORONTO TRANSIT WORKERS DESERVE BETTER 🚨 A disturbing scene reportedly captured on a TTC 501 streetcar on August 29 is raising serious questions about what operators and passengers are being expected to tolerate on public transit. TTC employees can be exposed to drug smoke, human waste, disruptive behaviour, safety incidents, and vehicles being taken out of service for cleaning or security concerns. Yet the people keeping Toronto moving rarely seem to be at the centre of the political conversation. Where is the urgency around protecting operators and riders? How often are vehicles being removed from service because of these incidents? What impact is this having on reliability, safety, and operating costs? Compassion for people struggling with addiction, homelessness, or mental-health challenges does not require accepting unsafe conditions on public transportation. It is deeply upsetting to watch people mock or dismiss individuals who say their lives were changed after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. Many of us did what we were told was the responsible thing. We went to work, went to school, trusted the system, and never imagined we could end up dealing with lasting health problems afterward. None of us asked to become disabled. None of us asked to lose our careers, independence, health, or quality of life. None of us wanted to spend years searching for answers. That is why the lack of mainstream attention surrounding testimony at the Allison Inquiry has been so frustrating. When people are publicly sharing deeply personal stories about illness, disability, medical treatment, and their experiences with the healthcare system, those stories deserve serious examination—not ridicule. You can support vaccination policy and still have compassion for someone who believes they were injured. You can disagree politically and still listen. Seeing some people on the political left laugh at or belittle people describing serious health struggles is especially difficult. Mocking a disabled person because their experience challenges your political beliefs is not compassion or progress. For many people, this is not an internet debate. It is their everyday life. We are not asking everyone to automatically agree with every claim. We are asking people to listen, investigate the evidence, report on the testimony, and treat those suffering with basic human dignity. Victims deserve answers. Victims deserve medical support. Victims deserve to be heard. Where was the coverage from CBC, CTV, Global News and other major Canadian outlets while these testimonies were being heard? I was already fighting to survive. Then the government told Canadians there would be consequences if we refused. After my serious accident in 2016, every day became a battle with post-concussion symptoms, chronic pain, brain fog, memory loss, hearing and vision problems, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Years later, I was required to take the COVID-19 vaccine. I can only speak about my own experience, but afterward, my health severely declined. From my perspective, it took what little strength I had left and broke me down physically and mentally. This decision was not made in an environment that felt free of pressure. Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government introduced vaccination requirements affecting federal employees and travellers on federally regulated planes and trains. Those who did not comply could lose access to travel or be placed on unpaid administrative leave, subject to limited accommodations. Jagmeet Singh was not part of the Liberal government, but he and the NDP pushed for stronger enforcement. In August 2021, Singh publicly demanded clear “consequences” for federal employees who refused vaccination, and the NDP said workers who refused could face discipline. Canadians were told to comply or potentially face consequences involving their employment, income, mobility, and ability to participate fully in society. Today, I live with widespread pain, weakness, numbness, mobility problems, insomnia, memory difficulties, and exhaustion. Some days, simply standing or walking is overwhelming. I am not sharing this for sympathy. I am sharing it because my experience has pushed me to fight for Canadians who feel harmed, pressured, dismissed, or forgotten. We all have our own stories—but what happened to us cannot become our entire identity. We must stand together, demand honest answers, support those who are struggling, and fight for accountability as survivors who refuse to remain silent. We are not defined by what happened to us.
