This drill won't get you viral on social media but it is one of the most useful tools for developing defenders. Don't open your hips, Guard your yard, chest the drive... One of my favorite drills: Close the Gate. Trust me, it might look easy, but try it out.

A while back, I had an idea I was convinced would work. Years ago, Nike ran its “Signature Moves” series — short films breaking down the details behind great offensive skills. I wanted to make the defensive version. Not just defensive highlights. The actual techniques great defenders repeatedly use: The Reach Around Steal. The Sniper Steal. The Catch Steal. The Wide Steal. The Stunt Steal. The Gap Block. The Top Lock. Defense presented the same way that offense was and is: as a craft worth studying. So I made the series. And… it never really took off. Some videos did fine. Most didn’t. Eventually, I stopped making them. But looking back, I still love the idea. Because one of the things I’ve always wanted to do with Lockdown Defense is make defense feel like a skill players actually WANT to learn. Something worth studying. Something worth practicing. Something cool. Something that might even interrupt a player's feed full of shooting workouts and dribble moves. Maybe the series didn't work. Or maybe I just haven't figured out the right way to do it yet. Either way, I still believe great defenders have signature moves too. Here are some of my favorite: 🎥 Signature Move Series: • Dyson Daniels — The Reach Around Steal • Dyson Daniels — The Sniper Steal • Kawhi Leonard — The Catch Steal • Cason Wallace — The Wide Steal • Cason Wallace — Spear thru • Scottie Pippen — The Signature Charge • The Signature Hustle • Alex Caruso — The Stunt Steal • Alex Caruso — The Gap Block • Toumani Camara — The Top Lock If you made it this far, thank you. And if you watch them, let me know which one is your favorite.

Many coaches on Twitter will hate me, but we do this drill everyday. Here’s why we do it and why I’ll always do it…

The Miami Heat are challenging one of the biggest assumptions in modern basketball defense: “Giving up threes is bad.” But they've flipped the math. Because not all threes are created equal. This season: • Open 3PT% ≈ 40% • Contested 3PT% ≈ 33% That’s a 7% drop in efficiency. And when you look at Miami this is where things get interesting: They give up the 4th most threes in the NBA… …but they’re 2nd in contested 3s. So they’re not trying to eliminate threes. They’re changing the type of threes you get. And it's resulted in the 4th Def Eff in the league. And it goes even deeper: Catch-and-shoot 3s ≈ 36.7% Off-the-dribble 3s ≈ 30% Another 7% swing. They’re not eliminating the three-point line. They’re defending the three-point quality.

The Setup Steal: this is when you realize great defenders are playing chess, not checkers.

Dyson Daniels put on a defensive clinic last night on Jalen Brunson. Brunson only scored 4 points when guarded by Daniels

One of my favorite defensive lessons from last season came from Miami: Despite what analytic talk might convince you, giving up threes isn’t necessarily bad. Giving up the wrong threes is. Miami gave up the 4th-most threes in the NBA… …but ranked 4th in Defensive Efficiency. How? The league average last season was around: • Open 3PT% ≈ 40% • Contested 3PT% ≈ 33% Miami ranked 2nd in contested threes. They weren’t eliminating the three-point line. They were changing the quality of the shots opponents got. It we go further: • Catch-and-shoot 3s ≈ 36.7% • Off-the-dribble 3s ≈ 30% Another drop off in efficiency. So great defense isn’t always about taking everything away. Often, it's about finding the winning edge in the margins.

Was trying to find the coaching edge in BOS vs PHI, so I went to ATOs in the last 2 games. PHI: 30 pts (27 poss) BOS: 18 pts (25 poss) Kept expecting some scheme wizardry by Nick Nurse but… It’s mostly been Kelly Oubre Jr. blowing up actions vs Tatum / Brown. Probably not the guy you want to keep testing out of timeouts if you're Boston.
