On Earth, solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes in front of the Sun as seen from the ground. On Mars, sometimes one of its moons does the same thing…but they’re too small to fully cover the Sun’s disc. Perseverance captured this look at Phobos transiting the Sun in 2024.

Got something weighing you down? Shake it off (like Curiosity)! The Martian explorer unintentionally picked up a rock while drilling a recent sample, but the team was able to dislodge it by having the rover move its robotic arm and vibrate the drill until the rock fell off.

We've studied the moons of Mars from Earth, from orbit, and even in the sky as seen from the surface. (This view comes from the Curiosity rover.) Now, the JAXA(Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) MMX mission will see them up close, and even bring a sample home. NASA will be assisting each step of the way. 1/2

What was once only visible from a distance, we could now reach out and grasp… Throughout history, humanity dreamed of Mars – but it was never within reach. That changed 50 years ago when NASA's Viking 1 lander touched down on the surface of the Red Planet on July 20, 1976.

Hopefully you're taking some time off during the holidays. Our fleet of robotic explorers at Mars will have a break in their usual routine, too, but for a very different reason: about every two Earth years, the Sun blocks the view between Earth and Mars. 1/3
